WOW... what a surprise.

Syracuse University has scheduled a hearing for today (Friday Feb 8th) to consider the eligibility of basketball star James Southerland's appeal to have his eligibility restored.

There are not many certainties in life but I think that it is pretty much a lock that the University of Syracuse restores Mr. Southerland's eligibility before the regular season is over just in time for the Big East Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. Ra-Ra-Rah !!!

rumor around the SU campus is that he had someone doing all of his school work for him, and it is a school mater and school has taken action before the ncaa gets involved

It's Syracuse; Jim Boeheim and now, for all intents and purposes, an ACC school. The NCAA will never get involved.

I have also heard chatter among SU fans that the academic issues regarding Mr. Southerland extend beyond him.

There goes the promised "tutor" promised to Chris McCullough!

So what you are saying is a legitimate tutor for SU basketball players is about as real as Manti Te'o's girlfriend.

Syracuse takes its academic integrity policy very seriously. Not saying that Southerland won't be reinstated, but I can promise you all the hearing was no 'farce.'

I was on that panel at St. John's, and I was always disgusted with the other students on the panel for throwing every student under the bus to kiss up to the administration.

So it was you who got me kicked out of school! lol

1. The below linked October 2012 NCAA report report regarding graduation rates among Syracuse University mens basketball players indicates that the school may not place the same emphasis among basketball players as other students.

2. There is chatter on the street of Syracuse that the NCAA investigation that uncovered the allegations against Mr. southerland arose may be broader than a single player.

The STREET of Syracuse.
Priceless.
What a town.

What percentage of D1 basketball and football players do legitimate college level work anyway? C'mon, the concept of student athlete is a myth for the big money making sports that serve as the the minor leagues for professional sports.

True but if they're in a basket weaving class they should at least weave their own baskets.

Otis
I think I put this into some other post. On this week's Syracuse SNY show, Coach Beiheim, looked glum and quickly said there was no word on if and when Southerland would have his case decided. The coach certainly seemed persimissitic about the return - and of course hopefully nothing happens before Sunday.

all the best

Southerland has won his appeal and will likely play today. Classic Syracuse - I have a friend that cheated up there and got expelled; this kid cheats and gets a slap on the wrist. Classic Syracuse. GO REDMEN

It figures he would be cleared right before our game.

What varsity sport did your friend play. End of story. The only fairness that occurs is when uneducated athletes, passed through the system, have to ply a non-sports related career. At that point they learn, that while there are many they encounter who will revel in their on court heroics, the job market will offer them nothing in return for those exploits. The lucky ones end up in the athletic department or development at universities.

that was what one of the posters said in the Syracuse report. Yep they need him against us. What a joke. Plus being from NYC he will have added incentive as all ex NY'ers do.
