Style of Play

Watching top 25 teams play and comparing them to our style of play. It doesn't look like we have any plays at all, we are running the ball up and playing street ball.

All other teams look composed and know what they are doing before the ball is passed, everyone strategically placed and moving around with a purpose. Is this inexperience, lack of a point guard, leadership, or lack of actual plays?

Watching other teams their offense looks smooth and clean; they bring the ball up they stop call plays, they set up and adjust. Their athleticism is then shown when the play falls apart but they still find a creative way to score or get the ball back.
Watching our game we are far from smooth and clean its rough, the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing half the time or why. Its street ball, and showing off athleticism, I feel that's the reason why we start cold and have problems closing games. This is not going to fly in conference play.

any thoughts?

..Disagree.Lavin has been and workedwith great hall of fame coaches Do you really think that he just has them running around without purpose or a plan Come on now You can lead a horse to water but you can not make them drink Think Branch with help a lot

We're 11 games into a season with five newcomers getting real minutes (including four freshmen); four sophomores and two would-be starters on the sidelines.

I know the "patience" message is wearing thin, but we're often described as the youngest team in major college hoops. Let's give this team a little time to learn the college game (and Lavin and staff a little time to teach it).

I'll go back to the 2010-11 team – Lavin's first season. Even with nine seniors, they looked like a mess early in the year but were an absolute treat to watch by February/March.

We are in the top half of the league in FG% and assist to t/o ratio. If we were just athletes running no plays, do you think this would be the case? C'mon, this is an extremely simplistic view. Watching other teams offense looks clean...which teams? All teams? We certainly do run an offense and run plays. Young teams without a true PG don't always run things smoothly, but we do run sets.

I understand that we do not have a true point guard so we have to wait until Friday to see where we stand, and I'm comparing them to the elite teams, where we want to be, the perennial tournament teams, the Duke, Syracuse, Louisville of the world. Its the confidence and they bring when they play, I get that we play a fast paced game, but you still have to make calculated plays which I feel hardly happens.

We just don't have an offensive post presence.
Forces the offense to run a lot of motion and be perimeter oriented.
Wish they would hit the offensive boards a lot harder to make up for these deficiencies.
Was always a trademark of Louie's teams.

I'm frequently frustrated by our offensive woes too, but I think you need the cut them some slack because they are all freshmen or sophs. That's an excuse that I hate to use, but in this case it definitely applies.

The biggest transition from HS to college is learning how to move without the ball. College coaches spend tons of time drilling where to be on the court, how to use space, and how to set a good screen or pick. Our guys are good athletes and smart ball players, I think the offensive will be much more efficient by the end of January.

+1. We are missing a big part of the offense with somebody to score and rebound down low. Lavin though Sanchez would be that guy most likely. Unfortunately doesn't seem in the cards.

My recollection is that we hit the offensive glass hard under Jarvis, too, especially when Hatton was a senior. Usually this was a by-product of missing a lot. This team is actually shooting at a decent percentage. With the athletes we have, it should be a bigger part of the arsenal. My guess is we have to learn how to handle the defensive glass first. I wonder what kind of rebounding numbers our front court put up in high school. Rebounding should translate into the college ranks.
