StJohns Law drops to #107 in 2015 USNews rankings

St. John's Law drops in US News ranking -- Not good

St. John's Law ahead of CUNY Law by only 6 spots -- Not good

St. John's Law falls further behind #93 Villanova -- Not good

Since my other alma mater, IU School of Law - Bloomington, sits at #29, does that mean I'm in the tournament or do we have to win a few more games? :) I'm surprised these rankings are still relevant as I think too much emphasis is placed on criteria that doesn't necessarily measure the quality of the school . Of course in the very next sentence I'll contradict myself by noting that I relied on these rankings when I chose to go to IU (sight unseen) in 1999 and remain thrilled with that decision. Hopefully St. John's SOL will separate itself again from the other local and state options and continue to entice talented students to obtain their legal education at the university.

Yea, but look at the end result. You are stuck in Indiana - that should count for something negative. Just kidding. I've spent a lot of time in and around Indianapolis and like it just fine.

It also costs $100,000 more to attend for three years than CUNY.

Law down to #107
Education down to#126
Business still unranked.

A great looking campus is fine but was the price too steep.

Thank god the basketball team is good…….oh wait.
Man I used to come here to feel good.

For those of you unaware, the law school dropped to 107 in the US News rankings. It is now considered a "Third Tier" school. Not a good look at all. No president, a let down of a basketball season, and now a law school in the same tier as CUNY and New York Law School. Is there any direction with this university? Any?

What is the criteria for ranking the law school? I think many of us would agree that we are not attracting top notch students to the university, and haven't for a very long time. I do know someone who was awarded a scholarship to St. John's Law, and said many her classmates had gotten accepted to Ivy league law schools but opted for a full scholarship to SJU Law. You may or may not be aware that at SJU Law as with many other law schools scholarships are stipulated on students maintain a B average without curving - something only the best of the best can achieve. It's a nefarious process designed to retain only the best performing students on scholarship.

There are a number of factors; most importantly "selectivity" and "reputation". They get selectivity from weighing LSAT scores and gpas of entering students, and also to some degree the % of applicants accepted.
Reputation comes from a combination of a survey of professors and deans; and another survey of lawyers and judges.
Next they take a few quantitative things into consideration (which I would say should be eliminated) how much money is spent on each student, the number of volumes in the law library etc.
Lastly, they consider employment results for recent graduating classes.

Legal education as a whole is in upheaval. It's hard to tell if the rankings drop is actually a substantive change in quality. I would assume it's not.

This has nothing to do with law school but all in all was worth a laugh. This is a very big week for HS seniors in hearing from schools applied to during the regular admissions process. Over the next couple of weeks, virtually all college will have sent out acceptances for the class of 2018.

On my flight home last night there were 5 kids sitting behind me travelling together. They were either HS seniors or college freshmen I am presuming. One of them mentioned that one of his friends was posting on facebook his tally of acceptances, which is what some dorky kids do. The kids commented out loud, "Yea, he's posted that he is 4 for 4 in acceptance ratio. But where did he get into? St. John's?"

I was going to say something to the kid, or at least point to my SJU windbreaker, but he wasn't wrong.

The message delivered by the kid's statement is telling of how StJohns is perceived.

SJU breeds mediocrity, they are exceptional at nothing! It pains me to say that about my alma mater, but it's true!

you know Otis, when I applied and was accepted to the pharmacy school at SJU, for me it may as well been Harvard. I couldn't have been happier or prouder to be on campus every single day of my student experience. It was a giant bonus that I got to root for the Redmen as my own team. So many of my peers at SJU today would have landed in a prestigious school, and many of their children have. It's too bad that SJU, through poor leadership opted not to become more competitive academically, and instead went in the other direction. St. John's always accepted very average students, but not until recently did average students predominate.
