Stay in School

None of our guys are even projected to be second round picks so hopefully this is a non-issue and no one gets any crazy ideas.

On a side note, watched the Lenny Cooke special on Showtime. Very sad. Lenny was asked if he would do anything different and said he would have come to St Johns for a year. The end was hard to watch.

I am kind of shocked Zags would have an article like this. He usually is flaming the go pro side of it, which I think is terrible. These kids hear nothing but biased and/or self-serving opinions about how they are going to be all-stars and first round picks.

The first scout seems kind of clueless to me...the second scout hits the nail on the head with everyone.
I am the biggest Harrison fan out there, but he has absolutely no shot in the NBA. He is soooooooo slow and he looks like he's 6'1 because he has poor length. There is literally no chance he plays in the NBA...which is a shame because he has all the skill in the world. There are plenty of faster 6'5 -6'8 guards with superior length would be able to stay in front of him have plenty of time to recover if he gets a step on them, and send his shot into the stand multiple times every game. He won't be able to separate from anyone. And who would he guard?

One thing that concerns me ,is it is not inconceivable that Jorden, CO, and Sampson could leave for the NBA next year. If that happens all of our core players will be gone. Balamou and Jones are question marks and neither were ranked high in HS.
We really need to get a couple of descent recruits this year and start grooming them. Like Moose says we don't want to be starting from scratch in 15. Of course if we could get studs like Diello and Brisque that would soften the blow somewhat.

Richard, I understand your concern, but I don't think it's warranted. These guys are not going anywhere. This years NBA Draft is extremely deep. Those three guys would not get drafted if the draft were held tomorrow. Barring a sensational end of the season run by this team where all three of those guys play phenomenal, they are not going anywhere.

Show the kids the Lenny Cooke documentary and then some headlines of guys like Iverson made almost a quarter $BILLION and is now broke.

Especially considering the start up time that Lavin would need to get the team going.

I really can't stand this type of logic, no offense. If any of our kids bolts for the NBA, it will mean that they've broken through and had a ton of success over the rest of the season, including post-season. Would you tell one of your kids to stay in school if Google, or Goldman Sachs offered them $500,000 per year for a job that might not be there in a year? Leaving early is a bi-product of a successful program and it's something we have to live with. It's one reason we've hired a great recruiter like Lavin. But you can rest easy, because no one is leaving for the NBA after this season.

He is talking about next season and we already have three spots to fill this year and four spots next year. It is important to bring in a couple of players this year to keep the classes even unless Lavin expects to sign at least seven strong players in the 2015 class.

I think Sampson and Obekpa will stay all four years and Jordan will stay at least three.

I don't think Sampson will be draftable or NBA ready until after his senior year. He's very frail and has a ton of question marks. Obekpa will be draftable in 2015, but look at all the size that draft...6'11 and 7'0 players all over it. It will be one of the biggest International drafts of all-time as well. 18 projected first round picks by Draft Express are either high school seniors or young International players. Obekpa is projected as a mid-second rounder by Draft Express in that draft...but as the 23rd big man chosen! He'd have to be crazy to risk that after the best draft in a decade or so in 2014.

Jordan is not on any mock drafts for 2014 or 2015. He doesn't even have a profile on Draft Express. I do expect we'll start seeing his name appear as a 2nd rounder in 2015 before the year is over. Draft Express has 10 PGs getting drafted in 2015, five in the first round, and two high school kids, Mudiay and Tyus, going in the lottery.

Im not talking about this year. I am talking about next year when we will loose DLO, Greene, Branch,Pointer and anybody else who may get drafted..

It's almost hard to envision how good the team will be next year if all the core players return. My only concern is that one, or God forbid two of them, get it in their heads to come out early, i.e., after this season, as did Eric Barkley and Omar Cook. It seems, though, that something is taking place among this year's Johnnies - not just meshing on the court, but off the court as well. From the quotes I'm seeing from them in the press and the way they seem to interact, I get the sense that these kids care about each other. If that's the case, the sky is truly the limit, and Coach Lavin has to get much of the credit for serving as a role model and teaching the players to care first about team, then about themselves.
