I really don't think that this was the time for a tuition increase. This decision was not thought through. Then to add a $200.00 late fee does not make any sense.
What I can see happening is some students deciding to transfer to city or state schools. This would have a devastating financial effect on the University.
I'm sure the $ value of increase is more than CUNY, even for those getting most aid, but CUNY also voting on tuition increases and I think SUNY too. Seton Hall raised tuition 3.5% recently too.
Tough for the kids but need to go where its affordable for them. Our mission makes conflicts with what it takes to be financially stable. Smaller and profitable may be best path if it were achievable. Hard to do if cant extract operating costs disproportionately.
I totally agree with their gripes about having to pay more and they aren't even having in person classes. But what I don't quite get is "systemic racism" on campus. Sounds like some Bubba Smollett stuff. SJ is located in the most diverse borough of the most diverse city in the US practically...and SJ is among the most diverse universities in the country. Not saying some rare racist incidents can't happen even in diverse areas, but systemic racism? Really? If people don't ask for proof the university gets slandered with this.
