St John's to Host the East Regional at The Garden in 2027

Hopefully, we are not only hosting it but playing in it. 😉
Not sure because every sport is constantly changing their rules but we may be barred from being seeded in the east regional since we host the regional semis and final.

We are.

But, with the pod system, we could still go to any first or second round location, so we could be local early.

Below is a list of thie NCAA men’s tournament this season’s, the 2024-25 season.

I am hoping that the Johnnies get sent to Providence or Lexington Ky for the first and second round games.

I am just hoping we make it, I really don’t care where they send us.

I generally feel the same way. Then, the matchup comes out, I see we're at a geographical disadvantage (Gonzaga in Denver, Northern Arizona and Gonzaga in Tuscon as a 2 seed - the pod system came a couple of years later), and I get bummed about it.

North Carolina and Duke play in Greensboro every year, it’s ridiculous. I know it’s not technically a home game for them but it’s close enough. It doesn’t pass the laugh test.

am i making this up... but thought a team couldn't* play in the Region where they are Hosting...

So when we are the Overall 1 seed in 2027... the East region wouldnt be an option since we are hosting at MSG...

It's like we're taking our No. 1 seed and just throwing it away. Can't anything go right at STJ?!?!?!?!?

Yes, but we could still stay close to home the first weekend, because of the pod system.

I thought the rule is you cannot play an NCAA tournament game at your home arena and since we use MSG as one of our arenas, that precludes us from being sent there in 2027. And we should not schedule a home game at Brooklyn in 2028 since they are hosting first and second round games there.

They don’t have the support staff to host an event such as this. We used to clean house of all Admins and GA’s and many student workers to man the MSG regionals. Maybe 50-75 support people.
St Johns get compensated for hosting? (assume every 'host' school would if thats the case...)

Yes. The University does get compensated by the NCAA. The planning starts about 9 months out with MSG and several key staff members. The NCAA sends each school a couple of hundred page "playbook" detailing every aspect of running the event.Ticket Manager, Sports Medicine, Sports Info, Athletic Business, Equipment Manager and a few others. Depending on the AD at the time, those key members would get a stipend post tournament for a job well done. In the five times I hosted it both at Nassau Coliseum and MSG I might have gotten that stipend twice.

I was a "host', along with Jim Ducey when we hosted at Nassau Coliseum in the early Nineties. We got free tickets to the tournament and lodging at the Huntington Hilton. My team was George Washington, coached by...Mike Jarvis. I did geta GWU NCAA shirt out of the deal. We were supposed to help the teams with practices, etc. as if the teams at that level couldn't handle that.

I remember that tournament well...our guy Dutch was hired as tournament equipment manager ...then he refused to do the teams uniform wash.
I remember meeting Jarvis at the Arena. We gave GW the NHL visitors locker room. The prior game went double OT so he and I just hung out chatting for awhile.
My first was 82 at Nassau when we hosted and lost to Alabama.
