QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's soccer team opens the 2011 season against No. 4 Maryland at 8 p.m. on Aug. 26 in the second game of the ACC/BIG EAST Challenge at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. The Red Storm and Terrapins will take to the field following a 5 p.m. matchup between West Virginia and Virginia.

St. John's is 18-7-7 (.672) all-time in season-openers, including a 12-3-5 (.725) record with head coach Dr. Dave Masur at the helm. The squad is also unbeaten (6-0-1) in season-openers since the 2004 season.
This year's opener marks the second earliest opener (Aug. 25, 2006) for St. John's, which is 8-2-1 all-time in the month of August.
Maryland represents the first of nine opponents on the Red Storm's 2011 regular season schedule that played in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
St. John's posted a 10-6-2 (4-3-2) mark and reached the BIG EAST Tournament for the 20th-consecutive season in 2010, the longest active stretch in the conference.
In addition to 16 returning letterwinners, including six starters, the Red Storm welcomes 13 newcomers.

Inside The Series With Maryland
This will be the ninth meeting in an all-time series that dates back to 1995.
The Red Storm trails in the series 3-5-0, but is 2-1-0 in neutral site games and 1-1-0 in regular season matchups.
The contest marks the first time the teams have met since Dec. 12, 2008 when Maryland won 1-0 in double overtime in the 2008 NCAA Tournament Semifinals.
Six of the eight all-time meetings have taken place in NCAA Tournament play, where the Red Storm is 2-4-0 against the Terrapins.

Scouting The Terrapins
Maryland, ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll, posted a 19-3-1 record in 2010 and reached the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals.
Senior Preseason All-American Casey Townsend leads this year's Terrapins after registering nine goals, four game-winners, and five assists. Patrick Mullins, the reigning ACC Freshman of the Year, had five goals and four assists in his rookie campaign.
The Terrapins will have a new keeper in net as first team All-American and three-year starter Zac MacMath, who went 19-3-1 with 15 shutouts as a junior last season, signed with the Philadelphia Union after being drafted fifth in the MLS SuperDraft.





Exhibition Season Wrap-Up
St. John's went 1-0-1 in its exhibition season, playing BIG EAST foe Providence to a scoreless draw on Aug. 16 and defeating preseason Patriot League favorite Colgate, 2-0 on Aug. 20.
The Red Storm surrendered a combined total of four shots, one on goal, in its two exhibition games en route to posting a 29-4 advantage.
St. John's also combined for an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

St. John's Selected To Finish Third In BIG EAST Red Division
A season after reaching the BIG EAST Tournament for the 20th-consecutive season, St. John's was selected to finish third in the Red Division in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll.
The Red Storm, which finished third in the Red Division in 2010, garnered 93 points and trailed Louisville (120) and USF (98).

Belson Stadium Attendance Ranked No. 19 Nationally For 2010 Season
St. John's drew an average home attendance that ranked No. 19 in the country for the 2010 season, as announced by the NCAA. The Red Storm averaged 1,302 fans for 10 games at Belson Stadium, a figure that also ranked third in the BIG EAST.
St. John's had has had top-20 rankings in home attendance five times since 2002, including 19th (2010), 15th (2009), 20th (2006), 13th (2003) and 14th (2002).
The Red Storm has also ranked second in the BIG EAST twice (2009 and 2002) and third in the conference twice (2010 and 2006) in that same time span.
