St. John's / NCAA Tournament/ N.Y. Post Blog

The analysis is dead on, and what I've been posting here for the last week. We are still having a successful campaign, and even 9-9 would be a positive season.

Enjoy this while we can:

Big East Conf All
Syracuse (6) 6-1 18-2

Marquette (25) 6-1 15-4

St. John's 6-3 14-7

Louisville (12) 5-3 17-4

Notre Dame 5-3 17-4

Cincinnati (24) 5-3 17-4

Georgetown 5-3 15-4

Pittsburgh 5-4 17-5

Villanova 4-4 13-8

Connecticut 3-3 13-5

Rutgers 3-6 12-8

Seton Hall 2-6 13-8

Providence 2-6 10-10

DePaul 1-6 10-10

South Florida 1-7 10-10

I agree the 2ed half of the schedule is harder then the first. What Marc seems to ignore is 3 road wins, and 2 wins vs. teams which are now 5-3. Hardly the bottom of the league.

the only thing i take issue with in the article is this....

"If the Red Storm get their, it would give them an 18-11 overall with a 10-8 mark in the Big East".

Their????......good god....

Fair analysis...slightly negative but fair. I wonder what he wrote about Nova before facing Cuse and L'Ville though. This is the Big East, and the supposed easy wins routinely turn out to be upsets. I don't care if it's Cuse matched up with DePaul. No guarantees in this conference. Are chances very slim we make it? Sure. Are we a hot team that can take down a Cuse/L'Ville? Why not, if Nova did it? We are also due to beat Cuse losing 9 straight to them.

Grammar is a lost art, even among those who write for a living. Sad!

This blog contains nothing new. We all know this. Nothing more that a game at a time. Speak to us after the Gtown game.
That game will shed a lot of light.

And those last two wins are about three points from being losses.

The goal hasn't changed. But they have to beat USD and Providence. Pitt and UConn are almost have to wins. If they can't do that, the games against the Syracuses and Louisvilles won't mean squat, even if they win them.

Ehhh they will mean something, but I see your point

I agree, and I don't agree with a lot of what he wrote. Lets play the games, I have a really good feeling STJ pays back Gtown tomorrow!

This is basically what I said in a previous post. They have to find a way to get to 20 wins somehow. If they wind up 18-11 overall, they'll need two wins in the BE Tournament to make the NCAA's. If they win 19 they'll need 1 BE Tourny win, if they win 17 overall, they'll basically have to make it to the championship game of the BE Tourny to have a shot.

Losses to MURRAY St,UNC-ASHVILLE, BAYLOR, USF don't give us a lot of ammunition beyond what our BE RECORD AND FINAL WON/LOSS record will be..

Would there be any consideration to the fact that Jamal Branch wasn't activated until after all of those losses?

Also, the good money is on Orlando Sanchez being declared eligible within the next several days :)

Marquete, Georgetown , Pitt and Notre Dame are barely in the top 25 or out of it and they will give SJU trouble ? Beating Syracuse will be difficult , we might have a chance against Louisville playing in the Garden , but we have a talented enough team to beat the other 4. This team plays good on the road. We played very good against Villanova right to the end of regulation , the only bad game was Georgetown. But SJU was struggling early on because of youth. With better foul shooting we'd be 8-1 now !!!!

Is there a good chance he'll be activated ? your right about Branch. Branch is essentially a freshman learning the ropes, each game he gets better and he definatly has made SJU a better team.

It's a moot point because there is definitely, well-documented examples of 2nd half of the season weighing more heavily than the first half for both bids and seeding consideration.

Where did this Sanchez news come from

In addition to weighing more heaviliy on the second half, the NCAA WILL downgrade a successful team who had a big injury in a tournament (see DJ Kennedy and our subsequent seeding in 2011). I see no reason why they shouldn't consider the addition of a player contributing to the team taking off and this being a much better team (NCAA worthy) with that player.

If you think Georgetown was the only bad loss, you are just looking at the final score. We played just as miserably against Rutgers in the Garden, only they matched us with equally bad basketball.
