St. John's in the 2012 MLB Draft

Not a surprise. He wants more than what teams can give at this point because of the new rules.

Did he come out and say he wants more than what teams can give at this point? Or is that a rumor? And how is waiting longer in the draft going to enable him to get more? If some team wants to pay over slot wouldn't they want to take him higher because the slot is then bigger? I'm just trying to figure out how this all works

It's not about slot/over slot anymore -- it's about your total money allocated for the top 10 rounds and every team has a different amount. Hansen might not even get drafted because his demands don't match up.

I think the new rules are going to hurt teams/players more than help

Or the lower he goes and less the $ the more chance he passes on the contract and comes back to school.

Matt Carasiti taken in the sixth round by Colorado, 198th overall.

Congrats to him, but I hope he gets traded before reaching the majors. Tough to bank on any pitcher, when half of his starts will be at Coors Field.

Thanks for the clarification guys...I've seen a lot of people online complaining about the new rules and it seems that it certainly will hurt teams and players more than it helps

A big part of it is if you take a guy early and he doesn't sign, you lose the money from that slot from your overall pool. So you can't take risks early because you lose more money. Hansen might have been a third-round talent but if he wants a boatload to sign and you can't agree, that's a chunk of money you can't spend on the other top nine you draft.

The new rules do hurt MLB teams and players, but it will be a big help for college programs.

A college coach now knows that any player or recruit drafted after the first ten rounds will more than likely return or come to campus with all else being equal, of course. Gone are the days when a team can swoop in, draft a college commit that slipped because of his firm commitment to playing in college in the 25th round and pay him second round bonus money to convince him to go pro.

I think it will also help those smaller programs that don't often have recruits that get drafted. A lot of the bigger programs often over-recruit knowing that the draft will cause some attrition. Now, they won't have to do that as much and some of that talent they would have taken on will trickle down.

Pretty much would have prevented Amir from being drafted where he was really.
