St. John's History of transfers

Thinking about all the criticism about our recent lack of success closing on HS recruits, but at the same time creating a quality roster of a number of transfers and jucos, I wanted to initiate a discussion of the teams of the last 40 years or so, and to list all the transfers. It seems to me there have been an awful lot, and I'm doing this from memory and perception so there may be errors.

I'll begin with the first teams I followed:

circa 1976: I remember the front line which included transfers Cecil Rellford and Ed Searcy, along with Beaver Smith (community college, or HS recruit?) John Farmer (transfer?)

1979 or so: Berwanger, Kelly, Calabrese, Larry Washington? All transfers?

Circa 1980: Curtis Redding, Rencher, Carter - all transfers

Circa 1983: Jeff Allen Transfer, Billy Goodwin (juco)

Circa 1985: Mike Moses, Walter Berry (juco)

Circa 1987 Rowan? Brust?

2002: Bootsy Thornton, Grant, Postell ?

Ok this is a start, probably loaded with errors. The point isn't that we shouldn't recruit HS players. OF COURSE we should. But if we compile a list, SJU may be more reliant on transfers and Juco's historically than most other successful programs.

Have fun!

The Whopper was a transfer who worked out well for us around 1970. I'm fairly certain both Postell and Tyrone Grant were four year players at St. John's though.

Our team has nine transfers, out of 13 players. If you are able to stay up late tonight, you can watch perhaps the one school with more transfers, Nevada Wolfpack vs BYU, on CBS Sports, at 11:00, EST. Nevada also has that five-star player who committed to us, and then reneged and signed with Nevada. They're coach, Eric Musselman, is worth a watch, but will probably be gone after this year.

There is a feature article on Musselman in this week's Sports Illustrated in case anyone's interested. I just started reading it.

Don't think Jordan Brown ever actually committed to us. Jaraan Brooks (4 star) from out west committed to us and then reneged.

Lamont Middleton played his freshman year at the University of Hartford (CT). He formed a formidable duo with Vin Baker. Vin was the 8th pick in the 1993 NBA Draft.

Kentucky State, my kind of power forward. Blocked a shot that George Johnson couldn't reach and should have been called goaltending to preserve a win over Hawaii and Reggie Carter. After the game the 2 guys admitted George could get up higher than Cecil and if he couldn't get it it had to be on the way down.

espken you still "THE MAN". Thanks for this.

Very extensive and comprehensive list.

One point. Chudney Gray never enrolled at Manhattan. They rejected him after he had committed due to his SAT score. He took the SAT again in the fall, passed making him eligible and then enrolled at St. John's for the second semester of his freshman year.

I also don't see Amir Garrett on the list possibly because he never played after he transferred form here although he did sit the year out practicing at San Jose State (?) before committing to baseball full time.
