St. John's Can't Overcome BU's Size / Newsday

Baylor is a scary team. They havea lot of weapons. They are a legitimate Final 4 contender in my eyes!!!!

They are nowhere close to being scary IMO.

I'd be surprised if they win 2 games in the NCAA tourney.

We aren't a small team though. Sure we were smaller than they were, but we aren't a tiny team. It was other factors like failure to defend overall that led to the loss. Would certainly be nice to get 6'9" Sanchez into the lineup though as it would help a lot.

I also wouldn't use the word "scary" when talking about Baylor. I wouldn't be surprised, if they won 2 games in the NCAA's, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see them bounced in the first weekend.

I agree! Our defensive strategy SUCKED and that is on the coaches. Zero adjustment to guard Heslip. Spacing and positioning for Rebs was atrocious! Yes, Austin will be a lottery pick and Chris had no chance this game but Jefferson was the only other "big" they had on the floor 80% of the game! They ran a 3 guard offense!!
With all due respect coach Lav, there was no 7 footer, after 7 footer, after 7 footer! His name was Austin and neither Jakarr, Chris or Christian were effective in boxing him out. Ricardo Gathers only played 17 minutes and was largely ineffective against our running game and he was sucking wind.
Our team is inexperienced and lacks a true floor general. It is as simple as that. If Sanchez is cleared, with Branch, this team will win more games than it will lose. These two losses showed the players, and more importantly, the coaches, what they need to do. My disappointment with Lav is the game he is playing with Gift and not doing his homework with Sanchez. It tells me his staff is not doing a good job vetting prospective players and signing 2013 studs. Hopefully, that changes.

So true regarding boxing out; got to feel for a body. Stick your a.. into their body and force them to jump over your back. Unfortunately, our athletes were use to dominate in high school using only their jumping ability. Practice boxing out - we're going to need to.

A well coached game plan that is executed can run circles around Baylor. Loved the way Tad Boyle coached his game vs. Baylor.

They have talent but also as we saw aren't very deep. Get one of their bigs in foul trouble and/or neutralize Heslip and its totally different.

It's understandable that our frosh front court had trouble but leaving Heslip alone so much is not. They were all over Marco from the getgo just based on his rep. The world knows Heslip is a killer from deep and we lost him all game. It might have been a contest if we had just neutralized him. Basically all Lavin's losses have featured porous trey defense. Even when we hit some we still allow too many. I think we have a lot of players capable of sticking a guy like Heslip but we refuse to deviate from the defensive game plan. Reminds me of a Mahoney loss to Columbia when we allowed a guy to hit six from deep. Then there was the St Mary's game when we were good but allowed a Heslip type to hit seven and beat us. This is not going to stop until the coaches react or the opponent has a bad shooting day. Open baseline jumpers are a gift we can't afford to give.

They actually did deviate from the game plan (played some man-to-man). I believe, after a couple of possessions, he (Heslip) still found a way to pop a trey or two after our guards were broken down off the dribble. In that situation, the wings can't help out, and just hope Obekpa doesn't get too much out of position where Jackson could dish to a big (for a dunk) or hope he can alter or block the shot, in case Jackson shot it. We have to react quicker to shooters.

Bourgault didn't get enough time or looks, but he missed one, and seemed to hesitate on another. Quite frankly, I hope we mix it up a bit more, as the season progresses. It was frustrating to see the opposition hit momentum-changing or dagger treys during our time in Charleston.

Nevertheless, I still think we're going to be fine going forward.
