St. John's By The Numbers

Three point shooting percentage:
3 Wins in conference: Marquette: 46%, Georgetown: 41%, Creighton, 44%
5 losses: Hall: 36%, Nova: 37%, Depaul: 26%, Butler: 29%, Georgetown: 27%
At Hall, startling contrast between first and second half: 50% down to 18%
At Nova, similar: 43% to 29%

In close wins OOC against Cal, VCU and G Tech, 3 point shooting % was under 40%. But we shot a ton of free throws. Of course, there are a lot of other stats that need to be analyzed. So question to be answered is why a team of 4 and 5 star players is 3 and 5 in conference? For this team, they don't shoot it well from 3, they don't win. At least not against Big East teams.

Conference stats are attached:

Overall, a look at the conference team stats don't look that bad. Two stats, however, stand out: worst defensive rebounding team in conference, which was predictable, and worst offensive rebounding %, which I guess means % of our own misses we rebound. Stats matter. I'm just not sure why, leading the conference in creating turnovers, and third on 3% field goal %, we are this bad. Thoughts?

The offensive rebounding percentage we are last in is the % of offensive rebounds we get as compared to total rebounds we get.
Interesting that Villanova is only mid pack in almost all stats, yet is still 7 and 0. They are first in defensive rebounds allowed, and first in defense. Here are the defensive rankings. Providence's strong numbers here indicate a team on the rise. If you defend every night, you don't have to be like St. John's and be lights out from 3 to win.

[quote="QueensBoy" post=318346]This is the more telling stats sheet IMO. It''s the big east only games. FG%, 3P%, Assists, all down as the comp has increased.

I thought I posted the conference stats, but I gave the full season stats instead. The conference stats show why Villanova is at the top. They don't let you score a lot (# 1 in least points allowed), their defense makes you miss, while they lead the conference in shooting %, are high up in 3 point%, and are the conference leader in 2 point %. They also make their foul shots. In a conference where most games are up for grabs at some point in the second half, it's not surprising that Nova finds a way to win.

Meanwhile, in St. John's land, the stats show that the guys lost 4 of the last 5, which coincides with Heron, Simon, Ponds and Clark shooting 3s at a combined 21 of 81 in the losses. That's 26%. Their individual % from 3 ranges from 0 to about 32%. So what does that tell us? Either this team should not be shooting a lot of 3s, or we should be more selective in taking them, and have an offense designed to get the spot shooters open with time to gather, square up, and release. What is troubling is that these losses weren't all against great defensive teams. Maybe team just in a shooting slump, or maybe they need to reign it in a notch or 2.

Which leads me to a theory. Just looking at G Town, McClung and Akinjo, both freshman, shooting better than our guys in their losses. Some other underclassman shooting it well. So why do 4 very experienced players go cold from 3 in a 4 game stretch, while Figgy is shooting it well? Again, just a theory, but pressure. The pressure, which none of these guys had before, The pressure that comes with high expectations for upperclassman. Our guys are playing lackadaisical but not loose. Playing to the scouts might be another issue.
