Media Day just ended - whole program lasted an hour and a half
Both head coaches held separate Q & A's with the media and then Ralph B & Tariq Turner
Ralph & Tariq also spoke with Akina Wellere and Tariq Owens
Good interviews but, as expected, nothing earth shattering uncovered today
Here are some highlights:
Coach Tartamella:
1. A lot of offense to replace - Lewis & Walker
2. Has seen good effort from the young kids (Hoppie, Charles, England)
3. Been to post season 10 straight years; 4 straight 20 win seasons
4. Emphasis on defense in preseason - has seen improvement in past week
5. Thinks this is the best shooting team he has had as a head coach
6. Likes being a dark horse - preseason ranking not as high as in past years
Coach Mullin:
1. Strength of team - quickness & athleticism
2. Preseason focus on defense and rebounding. Also being unselfish on offense
3. Shamorie - had most points ever by a frosh - stronger & quicker this year
4. Clark & Simon - bring experience & maturity. Should have tremendous impact
5. Simon - likes the open floor. Pass first & slasher. Will mesh well w/Marcus & Shamorie
6. Likes versatility of front court. They will rebound by committee
Akina Wellere:
1. Shot 47% from 3 point range last year - highest % in country
2. Shy by nature but learning to be more vocal to help lead newcomers
3. Knows that teams will key on her - working on new moves/shoot off dribble
4. Very superstitious - will change shoes at halftime if not shooting well
Tariq Owens:
1. Was 510" when started 9th grade - grew to 6'5" within 4 months
2. Gained 10 lbs during off season. Now between 205 and 210
3. Off season focus - shooting the J from several midrange locations
4. Major team focus - defensive intensity, cut down fouls, better communication
5. Clark & Simon - bring intensity and leadership to the team
Well done program. Ralph B & Tariq are optimistic that both teams will do well this year
