I'm on the west coast, so forgive me if this played on the east coast already, but ESPNU, as a lead in to tonight's Felipe Lopez 30 for 30, is currently showing our 1998 game at Syracuse.

I just looked at the ESPNU's schedule, and there are four games on their slate of the Johnnies. I believe Artest grabbed an offensive rebound late in the game versus Syracuse, and we could've milked the clock more as we had two or three-point lead. But he took it upon himself and went to the basket for a tough layup to give us a two-possession lead. My memory may be a bit foggy, but I know I'm somewhere in the ballpark on that particular ending.

The next game their showing is our Big East Tournament game, of the same season, against Boston College. I recall Artest and Lopez played extremely well in that one.

I've been watching this 1997 squad on ESPNU that's been running. This was a very good team. I know they got bounced by Detroit in the 1st round of the tourney. I really don't remember that game at all.

This team had Lopez, Hamilton, Artest, Postell, Grant. Four of these guys made the NBA. Hoping sometime in the near future we can have that many NBA players on the squad at the same time. I know the 1998 team was better, but this team should've made some noise.

Lack of a point guard played a big role.

Yeah, the Turner/Charles combo wasn't cutting it. Nonetheless, that was a very talented team.

I've been watching these games today also. Postell was such a good all around college player. Made big play after big play on both offense and defense and was great at getting behind the defense to convert on those lobs.

He definitely was a great player. Went under the radar a bit.

Bad job by ESPNU showing SJU-Miami from 1999 during their Felipe Lopez SJU refresh.

I was just watching the St. John’s vs Miami game from 1999 on ESPNU. Maybe it’s my advancing age, but I honestly had no recollection of that game. In any case, while I don’t miss Miami in the Big East, (they were a poor fit), I do miss their cheerleaders!
I also got to thinking, how would the board rate our coaches in the modern era. (I will define the modern era as 1980 to present day) . For this round, let’s examine strictly technical coaching ability. Do not consider recruiting. Do not consider personality. Do not consider team composition or staff composition.
This is strictly x’s and o’s on offense and defense. For ease, please rank them from best to worst.
Your nominees are:

Carnesecca
Mahoney
Fraschilla
Jarvis
Roberts
Lavin
Mullin

Note: I’ve left Kevin Clark out of the proceedings. He wasn’t around long enough.
The results should be interesting. Feel free to add commentary to support your grading!
Have fun!
