Sports Extra Tonight / FOX 5 / SJU Basketball

I believe this is on at 10:30, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Nooo. I know one if the anchors.

Johnnie's starting to generate a buzz

I recall Sports Extra being kind to us back then. I think they also had that guy John MacDonald. He gave us good publicity.

Anyone else on long island notice how cablevision news 12 ignores the johnnies? They never mention St John's. Last night they featured Hofstra and ignored the Redmen / Gtown game that was on national TV. I get "the Hofstra is the long island team thing", but we do have a fair number of alum and fans on the island.

Maybe a lot of Cuse grads work there?

Funny I used to work there and their two anchors Jamie Stuart and Kevin Maher are both Cuse grads but that's not why they don't cover SJU. It is just about the coverage map and local high schools is more important. If we had a local angle they would cover it ex. a big time player from LI. We would only cover mets/yanks on opening day and then playoffs, giants and jets practices only, rangers/knicks would be playoffs only (the westchester station would cover practice for the "network"), islanders when they were in nassau whenever we could get there for postgame and practices. There is only one ft photog that works for the sports dept and the new owners are cutting back even more in their coverage of sports. Hofstra is easy to get to from the station and when you see highlights it honestly could be because the photog showed up for less than 15 actual mins for the game.

Appreciate the excellent insight and I’m sure you’re right, but something tells me that their two sports anchors would be driving to Queens more often if Cuse was located there. They didn’t even give us the score Saturday after dong a minute on a Hofstra game.

I think they view SJU as a NYC school, instead on a L.I. school. Same has been true of Newsday over the years.

Cablevision News 12 are they still in business? I left for Directv about 20 years ago and never looked back. When I left their pitch to me was Directv doesn't have local news like News 12. LOL.
Cablevision doesn't have the NFL. Game over. I really didn't think they were in business any longer. Amazing how poorly they treated customers and yet they are still around.

Have to believe some of the increased TV and local newspaper coverage is a
result of Mullin being the coach. Almost everyone over the age of 45 with any interest in basketball remembers him playing at St. John’s. The media also likes these kind of stories where a star player comes back to coach his old team to success.

Of course our record doesn’t hurt and we would get coverage but the Mullin angle is really helping here.

That was Tom McDonald

As an aside, Lee Leonard, (who along with Bill, the Amazing" Mazar were the original co-hosts) passed away a week or so ago.

Mazar, by the way, was an adjunct professor at St. John's many years ago.

As a student at SJU we would see Mazar walking across campus and a friend of mine would always say hello to him by yelling out the "amazing Mazar". He'd laugh and nod back. He use to have this shtick where they would ask him arcane sports questions and he usually had the answers. He was the Amazing Mazar!

How many of you who live in Queens are ready to admit you live on Long Island? ;)

I felt Newsday always gave us very good to excellent coverage. New 12 - not in a long while.

There's probably more SJU alums living on long island than Hofstra alums.
