Sorry St. John's

Is this a joke? As the mid major you are the underdog. SF might be a solid mid major program, but you don't have anyone shaking in their boots.

Your team has a cool nickname if I recall. You are small fish in a big pond so I can't be 100% sure. The Dons? Regardless, nobody is confusing "the Dons" with St Mary's or Gonzaga, you will be disappointed when we run you out of your own gym.

Not that it means anything currently but, the University of San Francisco, had 2 NCAA Championships in a row, going back to the Bill Russell, KC Jones era. And, I think since they play in the same league as St.Mary's, Gonzaga, etc, calling them mid major is a miscast in my opinion.Academically, they are a high ranking Jesuit University.

MAAC teams here on the East Coast are mid majors, not schools like San Francisco, etc. And, I mean no disrespect to Iona, Manhattan, etc.

The Dons have pedigree credentials already in the books via their NCAA Championships, even if it was 50 some odd year's ago. That being said, I HOPE WE BEAT THEM.

And if the BE bb schools should split from the fb schools and a "National Basketball Conference" is formed (as rumored on several sites) SJ and San Francisco have been mentioned as being members of that conference.

Sick of overrating our opponents on here. SF is by definition a mid major through and through. No one cares what you did shortly after WWII...hell NCAA basketball changed so much in the past 20 years let alone 60. Mets fans think 1986 was 200 years ago...1950 is ancient in sports. For you to say they aren't a mid major is just false. They are not in a power conference. Yes they have 2 of the top mid majors in the country but that doesn't mean they are anywhere near as talented as Gonzaga or St. Mary's. Is SF a solid mid major? Yes. Are they a top 25 mid major team? No. They are not Detroit, Charleston, Davidson, Creighton, Murray St, etc. Last I checked this wasn't 1949 or 1950 and Bill Russell is 78.

Assuming you are counting Gonzaga in you tally of two of the top mid-majors in the country . . . you need to stop. Gonzaga is a high major program in a lower conference. They are not mid-major and haven't been since the Erick Barkley era at St. John's.

The definition of mid major is not low major, but not high major either. Gonzaga plays in a mid major conference. You don't determine major/mid major by how good the team is, you determine it by conference. This is not news. You can't assume Gonzaga would do just as good in the ACC or Big East. The reason mid majors have less respect is because you play lots of cupcakes and it's not as hard to win your conference. In the Big East, you can be a top 25 program and still get bruised up in conference play. It's insanely hard to win it.

Let's see who they play in conference: asterisks will represent legitimate competition. 1 great team, and 2 solid-very good teams. There are 5 cupcakes in their conference they feed off of. In other words, the cupcakes exaggerate how good the top 3 teams are. In the Big East St. Mary's and BYU would suffer and Gonzaga would probably be a middle of the road team. Very different scenarios based on conference.

Bottom line, the terms mid major and major are due to conference, not how successful you are. 63% of the WCC are cupcakes. These are facts, not opinion.

Gonzaga normally plays a tough non-conference schedule. They usually does fairly well against those particular non-conference foes.

Sorry jack ryan but we are about to introduce you to the second coming of Bill Russell albeit right handed in Chris Obekpa. Enjoy the block party!

Joe, this mid major took us out of the dance last time we played them and have done so every time we've played them. As a matter of fact, my wife, who knows nothing about basketball, knows about the Zags because of all the times I have complained about how they knocked us out! Her quote is "Gonzaga! Who are those guys?" LOL

Gonzaga is good. Easily the best mid major in the nation. But playing tough OOC schedules don't mean as much when you have a cupcake IN conference schedule. The key is to have a tough OOC schedule AND play in a major conference with the best teams. That's how you get national respect. Just because Gonzaga won a few against us doesn't mean they are the auto kings of the Big East. Let's see them vs. G'Town, Nova, Cincy, SH, UConn, etc. on a consistent basis. USF is nowhere close to Gonzaga.

Maybe some of you should consider becoming SF fans if you think they are a major team that dominates everyone. I'll remain realistic and call them a solid mid major and nothing more. Their conference is all cupcakes minus a few top teams. St. Mary's and BYU would lose to bottom feeders in the Big East. The bottom feeders in the Big East would feast on the bottom feeders in the WCC. 65% of their conference are no name cupcakes...the closest you can come to a cupcake in the Big East is DePaul, Prov, and Seton Hall and they would dominate most WCC teams no problem.

Gonzaga is one of the best teams in the country. I'd say top 3 and potentially #1. They've got no weaknesses. Arguing whether or not they are mid major is silly.
