Sly Fox is Closing

Well that certainly sucks. Damn. Their owner is a real good guy too and diehard St Johns fan

The Nova bus trip Lavin's 1st year was one of my favorite St Johns trips

Terrible news! I have been taking my son in laws to pregame dinners there for years! It has become a tradition! Owner is a great guy! I started patronizing the restaurant/bar back in 1968.

Outside of Alumni during basketball games, the place was empty. It made no attempts at trying to become relevant to the current students. The bar also had an identity crisis by being half restaurant and half bar and grill. Doesn't surprise me.

Alot of rumors are swirling around that SJU has been using its political influences to close down and put pressure on all bars near the University in an attempt to curb drinking by the students.

I hope the place gets bought out by another bar-owner and does not turn into another phone store.

I've been there late after games and the place was packed with an older crowd. Ed had some special promotions that filled the place up. $20,000 a month in rent is what killed it. Greedy landlords and having to pay greedy politicians their greedy taxes, and Ed gets left at the bottom paying them all. Shame!
Ed, thank you for all the good times and the occasional better seats than mine you threw my way when you had extras. You are a good man and you, your family and your hospitality will be sorely missed.

A lot has changed and recently never reached the heights of the late 70's early 80's however it was the only game in town for the fans.
Now it joins Dante's, Poor Richad's Pub, Gantry's, Sam's Cunningham Inn and other establishments gone but not forgotten by St John's Aluims.

The owner of Gantry's lived in my town. They were struggling for a long time before they closed, their business damaged when the drinking age was raised to 21. Even as an owner he was working a second job, and I believe he became a schoolteacher, or at least that was his plan. Poor Richard's had the best burgers this side of Donovan's in Woodside, and spent many extended lunches there. They had a regular bartender there with thinning blonde hair a fu Manchu mustache and glasses. Sam Cunningham's was THE frat hangout for decades. I learned from an older relative that the reason Sam's existed at all was that there was a time when SJU students were forbidden by University rules from drinking in any bar within one mile of campus. Sam's was almost exactly one mile away.

Question for current/recent students: Is an SJU card for meals/laundry/incidentals also accepted at local businesses? Many university cards around the country are, and it helps students with more choices to eat at local businesses, and helps those businesses too.

Besides Dante's, what other bars/restaurant could we attend which is close to the University, which serves good pub food?

$20,000 a month for rent, plus taxes. This is obscene! Not surprised that Ed had to close the doors! I hope that greedy bastard of a landlord sits with the property for 5 years! A good tenant is worth their weight in gold, and many times they will find out the hard way that the increase in rent was not worth it!

I have not seen Eddie in a while, if I do I'll ask him but $20 k a month is obscene, sounds maybe the landlords want them out so they can sell or tear down the restaurant I do not think sju admin forced them out the youngsters did not hang out there, it was an older crowd, and Eddie had a very solid relationship with the school catering parties doing alumni pre or post game parties for ca games. Plus big thing is the neighborhood changed.
