Slice & St. Anthony's of NJ Relationship

"Steve Lavin was a California guy," Hurley said. "I don't think if you ask [Cardozo coach] Ron Naclerio or [Christ the King coach] Joe [Arbitello], the guys that are coaching over in the city, how often he was in their gyms, it would probably be similar."

But he was SUCH A HARD WORKER THO!!!

He didn't get out on the road much PERIOD his last 2 years or so here.

Nothing new here. Been hearing the same stuff about Lavin for years. Although some on here are still drinking the Lavin produced cool aid. Couldn't manage to fill out a roster but couldn't be bothered to make his way to any of the myriad high School gyms that were within a few mile radius of SJU. Hell Jersey City's just stone's throw away from Soho. I can tolerate incompetence (IE Norm) better than I can tolerate someone who collects a hefty paycheck that they aren't willing to work for.

I'm sure Chris will recruit St. Anthony's, in addition to Slice's presence, and you can bet that if Slice thinks Chris needs some face time with Hurley Sr., he will make sure Chris knows that. No doubt Hurley Sr. not only respects Slice, but CM as well.

"But clearly Slice is very comfortable coming over and he's been coming over to the school for 20 years at a variety of different places and always warmly received."

Amen

Paging Salty Dog

Slice btw watching Ron Naclerio of Cardozo go for PSAL win record right now.

There is probably not another human alive today who knows and understands the local power players better than Slice does. In a very short period of time he has managed to restore our standing amongst local high school and AAU programs. Needless to say, we are most fortunate to have him here.

Sounds like Bob Hurley is waiting for a visit from Mullin.

Yep
Than it would behoove Mr. Mullin to drop by one of these days. :) Only reason for this post was to use the word behoove which I am pretty sure I never have before in my entire life. Thanks for the being indulgent. ;)

If anyone had any doubt about our previous coach's local recruiting, all we have to do is look at Rawle Alkins. We were not even on the radar screen under Lavin -- amazingly, we hadn't even offered a scholarship to the best player in NYC. Mullin calls Alkins on his first day on the job, shows him that he is a priority, and now we are in the thick of it.

Just the fact Hurley mentioned Mullin's non appearance at his gym should spark a visit from our astute coach. And you know this guy will be there unlike lazy Lavin.

MJ,

Despite the fact you are among my favorite posters on this site I cannot allow you to spin facts that would have us believe that that while head men's basketball coach at StJohn's the Tan TV announcer put any real effort, if any at all, into recruiting 5* Rawle Alkins,

See Alkin's own twitter in April 2015 after Coach Mullin's visit to Christ the King:

@Iam_RawleAlkins: Finally got that St.Johns Offer I've been wanting !

see also Alkins quote in Ap 2, 2015 Rivals article:
Alkins admitted on Thursday that even though he lives so close, he has never been to the St. John's campus, saying he had no reason to go there because the previous coaching staff never had any interest in making sure he went there. Now though with a new regime in place, Alkins says he is excited about the possibilities.

Someone claimed he didn't have an offer. He had an offer. That's all that was being said. MJ said nothing about them doing a good job recruiting him, just pointing out a factual error.

Spin? How do you know it's spin? Maybe, the stuff you're reciting is spin. The only spin came from the CTK coach, and his childish and petty behavior, per airing out his disdain on social mediia.

If you've paid attention to some of the things being said by Alkins, then you'll notice it can, at times, be taken with a grain of salt. Why can't the tweet I sent have merit? Based on CTK's coach actions, then I'd lean towards the tweet I posted having merit. Lose the agenda. Stop accepting something without looking at the total picture because it doesn't fit your agenda.

I didn't mean to start a whole discussion about Alkins here (and I appreciate Otis pointing out what Alkins himself said via Twitter). I was only referring to Alkins himself saying that he finally received an offer from SJU when Mullin came in. What is pretty clear is that even if Lavin did in fact extend a perfunctory offer at some point, we were never in the game for the consensus top recruit in NYC. Mullin came in and now we are.

We never had fewer NYC kids than we did under Lavin. Harkless was a great recruit and played well for a year, but the notion that he would be a "pied piper" for local recruits was clearly a fantasy. Look at our roster last year. Good players, mostly good kids, but not one local impact player. I'm not saying we should be all local like we were under Lapchick and Looie (the sport doesn't work like that anymore) but we should always be in the mix for good NYC talent.

The more you hear from local coaches about Lavin's inattentiveness, the more it makes me think of Jarvis and his arrogance. While Hill fell into our laps late in the Jarvis regime, in the late Jarvis years we were mostly stuck with lower-tier local guys, jucos with eligibility issues, and guys who embarrassed us off the court. Check out Jarvis' last roster.

I don't think things would have gotten that bad under Lavin, since he had the ability to recruit nationally that Jarvis never had. But clearly he was losing the local PSAL and CHSAA coaches (and you can add Hurley to the mix) and we would have had a difficult time getting top NYC talent as long he was here.
