SJU - Washington Redskins Article

If 75% support the name "Red Storm", why do they chant "Johnnies" at the games? Not sure Bondy has his facts straight.

That's a crap article that's been said over and over again. Likely, he is a lurker on redmen.com and got some of his SJU information from our posts. The thing I've always maintained is that racial stereotypes, while never helpful, are not the main problem for Native Americans. As a group they aren't subject to wide scale racism, at least in the part of the country. So, these icons don't perpetuate anything, because no one is connecting the images to what Native Americans are today. The much bigger problem is poverty, drug and alcoholism, education, and other social woes.

The banner in the picture on page 2 is timeless with Lou at the podium. That should be hanging on campus.

Beast, I agree but, I had the honor a few years ago of discussing race with one of the pre-eminent non-white psychiatrists in this country and one of the points he brought up is the wear and tear on identity and self-esteem of endless micro-insults that are built in to the language and the culture. As Americans I don't know that we can ever fully clean racism out of our consciousness, but we can actively work on what is obvious and make our affliction as benign as possible.

Change the team name to Skins, change color scheme of logo.

Everyone will continue to call them whatever they already previously called them anyway, and they can make money off new gear.

Done, and send that consulting fee to my PayPal account.

This is ridicolus... If there was ever any issue people on this board agree on its that changing from Redmen to Red Storm was a terrible one. People generally dislike the name change... And Redmen is still chanted at games because in large part people have not accepted the change...

Fuchsia,
We've chatted lots and you know I respect your personal and professional opinions. Thank you for adding something meaningful to the discussion. Of course I have to agree with you. I'll give you one anecdotal example that drives me crazy. I don't know if you call it racism, but I don't know what else to call it:

A bunch of white adult men are in the room together at a party. They chat about sports, about their kids, about the economy, their jobs, etc. The doorbell rings and a black couple comes in. The same white guys begin talking basketball with the black guy all too often, as if he doesn't know about anything else.

Maybe the above is an exaggeration, but I know it happens. It's sad, and maybe a little bit racist also.

Of course, if its a Redmen.com party, that's ALL that we would talk about :)

I once had a good friend whom I never, and still don't, consider racist say to me: "You're not like other blacks." Still a good friend. Lol!

Hopefully you weren't naked when he said it.

Not a day goes by that someone on this board doesn't give me a good laugh!
