Nice article by Greg Logan in Newsday on St. John's, mostly highlighting the coaches, specifically Coach Dunlap, who has two great quotes from John Wooden:

The first, "John Wooden would always say, 'Never recruit to height. Recruit to quickness.' We have quick players."

The second, referring to God's Gift, "He can rebound against the best in the country in my opinion. He's 7-3 through his arms. As Wooden always said, 'Measure their arms, not their height.' "

Also, another thing to note, is Coach Lavin will not be coaching Monday, does anyone know when he'll be back. Not that the team is short coaches, SJU probably has the highest coaches to player ratio of any college basketball team (8 coaches to 9 players - per the roster on redstormsports.com), but would like to see Lavin on the end of the bench with his recruits.

I find coach Lavin's absence a little puzzeling. If he had a low-grade prostate cancer, and chose not to have Brachtytherapy, robotic surgery would have caused him minimal side-effects. Two friends that had robotic were playing golf two weeks after surgery. If he had radical surgery, why was it scheduled for the start of the basketball season?
My guess, without prying, is that he is also undergoing radiation treatment to kill cancers cells that may have been found in the margins and just cannot work during the treatment.
Curtis Sliwa, who had robotic at Mt. Sinai, was back on NY1 one week after surgery. Lav's absence is unusual IMO.
wishing him well and a speedy recovery.

I've been having the same thoughts but haven't raised them because of the privacy issue. I know there are some unpleasant, but essentially minor, post-surgery complications that frequently occur, and I'm hoping that's all it is. Here's hoping he'll be back soon with a full recovery.
