SJU New Athletic Department Structure

Thanks Paultz….

always hard to critique org structure from a distance but looks like good moves, even if part of it is title rebrand along with some legit structure and responsibility changes.

Even it’s a rebrand, it will be a lot easier to spot when people are doings great job and also when they’re not. Putting a structure in place, I agree, is always good and will help with accountability.

Guessing this mimics the organization structure of Duke. The biggest problem Cragg will have is that without a green light to hire the type of talent and skills to fill the new leadership roles, our athletic department will not be able to attract employees with the higher level talents to fill these slots. WIthout this, it would be like moving around the deck chairs on the titanic, not that we are sinking ship, but that it will be of lesser impact.

I have always heard positive things about Mike Barry from a friend & fellow poster and elsewhere. It appears he has benefitted from the change. Good for this long term and dedicated professional from what I gather. Always great to be recognized!

We are NY’s Athletic Department?

From where I sit, on the outside looking on I can't really have an opinion on specifics good or bad.

I think we can all say (and as an interested Alum) is that Mr. Cragg is putting his hand print on the Athletic Department and is taking control. I would assume that's why the University hired him and its good to see. Sounds like we are in good hands.

And if we didn't already figure out that he'd be heavily involved with basketball team, he named himself team administrator for men's basketball (along with the aforementioned Barry).

Looks like the Mom and Pop days may be retired to the history books, hopefully.

We shall see. Unless the University opens the check book a bit there is only so much you can do on a very tight budget.

These may seem like small details but they can make a big difference. Our athletic department has been somewhat of a mess and had a mom and pop culture. There have been some talented people for sure, but they were good in spite of the department and not because of it. We needed a culture shift in the worst way.

That's always been the case. The AD and Barry both being that

Always good to put your own stamp on something even if it's just minor but defining roles and responsibilities ( not sure if thats whats happening here )

I've met Barry through some of the guys here and he is nice guy and his brother Kevin was real good dude

Here's the thing many of our fans refuse to acknowledge: When we cheer, "We are St. John's", there's a reality there. We ARE St. John's and if our fans and alumni want the school to open its checkbooks, WE must open ours - just like fans and alumni do at schools that consistently win. Cragg knows this more than anyone, but if our fans and alums don't follow suit, might as well chant, "We were St. Johns" when teams could win on a dime with alumni opening up their checkbooks so schools could open theirs too.

Nice to see that he understands the value of a winning basketball program!

I get what you mean that General alumni giving is important to athletic dept., but reality is little donors won't make a dent in what is needed for facility upgrades etc. Even if miraculously 5K new donors gave $500 each that's only $2.5M. Maybe more turnout for games moves the needle too.

Cragg needs to develop the relationships with the small circle of alumni who can make substantial donations, as well as corporate.

University is doing a lot of good things but I'm sure there's a lot of waste and questionable programs etc. The University itself also needs to open the checkbook for facilities if they believe our one athletic program is worth keeping a national name recognition.
