St. John's and Hofstra will play pickup together every week this summer, sources told @CBSSports. Terrific idea by both programs. #SJUBB

Hofstra begins the month with a 1-0 lead over St. Johns. You know what I mean

Pick up what, stix? What exactly does this even mean? Unfortunately I'm over 20.

I read that the MAAC may be pursuing Hofstra to join their conference
The MAAC renewed their contract to hold the post season tourney in Albany through 2019
But they are interested in moving it to the new Nassau Coliseum thereafter
That would be a great move for Hofstra - I never thought the CAA was a good fit for them
It would certainly create more local rivalries and should generate more interest for them

Hope the scrimmages/pickup games are open to the public.

Not scrimmages but pick-up games because they are not officially sanctioned (coaches aren't allowed coaching or instructing). If you can find out when and where they are being held and, can gain access to the building, I guess you can watch.

When I was a student, this was not an uncommon thing. A lot of players from the area that went to other schools knew our guys from playing with and against each other in High School and AAU (Riverside, Gauchos, Brooklyn USA, Madison Square etc.). So you would have guys from schools like Syracuse, Iona, Fordham and others, playing with or against St. John's guys five on five pick-up games over the summer.

This sounds more organized although not "officially sanctioned"

When I was a student at St John's, men's basketball practices were open to the public
Knowing I wanted to be a HS coach someday, I often sat in the stands to observe/take notes
Got a great education!! Spent almost as much time in AH as I did in actual classrooms
I doubt that any big time programs allow students to watch in season practices these days

I did same Mark & through the years bumped into a lot of folks visiting Looie at different points of the year. Once Lou introduced me and other students to Nino Benvenuti, the former middle weight boxing champ. Coach had a great relationship with Italian sports coaches & athletes. My grades suffered, but I had a ball. Where is that library? :)

Watched a lot of practices as well, different era in that respect.

Send Mussini, Ellison, & Freudenberg to Rucker Park or some of the BB courts in Queens & Brooklyn for some real pickup basketball....

That's how Mullin said he got so good right ?

I know that when Hofstra practices in the arena they leave it open to the public. You can call the Hofstra basketball office to find out when/if they practice/play in the arena. However they recently opened a practice gym, which i don't believe they have opened to the public. Worth calling their basketball office though if you're interested impossibly going.

Library was located across Union Tpke.

Yup. Did most of my studying there.
Didn't improve my GPA, but learned a lot about life there

I actually spent a good amount of time in the Library, both the regular and Law Libaries (being an undergrade I wasn't supposed to get in the Law one, but knew people and was a good place to cram for tests as it stayed open later). I couldn't studied better there than at home.

I also spent a lot of time at the establishments across Union Turnpike and learned a few things there also.

During my time at St. John's there were closed practices especially the latter years. Even before that, it was not uncommon for a student manager to check on who was watching in the stands.
