Sir Dom or Not Sir Dom that is the question?

I just got through reading through the Xavier game thread. There was plenty of bashing of players, coaches, etc. to go around. I wanted to focus this particular thread on Sir Dominic Pointer. He certainly was slammed around quite a bit in that other thread. In fact one poster said this in response to a suggestion that Pointer is one of our better players: "You don't watch basketball if you think pointer is one of our best players."

Well I watch plenty of basketball and my friend (who has been sitting court side at Alumni/Carnesecca arena every year since 1970) and I both love Pointer's game. Admittedly he played terrible against Xavier and he is not always consistent but in my opinion he is a difference maker on this team. He is our best on the ball defender, a great player on the press and is extremely explosive in the open court. In many ways he has more attractive NBA qualities than other more highly touted players on our roster. I think when we press and play more of a full court game, that allows us to play in transition more and in the half court less, then Pointer is our best weapon. His abilities in the transition game are at a very high level. I know there are some voids in his game, but I believe our success is connected to commitment on defense and Dom is our most versatile and talented defender. His game is unique and I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I don't think we succeed this season or next without Dom being an integral part of the mix.

Agree. He's the heart and soul of the team. Obviously not a scorer but a play maker nonetheless. When Dom plays well this team is at a different level. He just needs to be on the court with the right combination of players so he doesn't have to score or handle the ball. This team is at its best when we are running and pressing and Dom is the catalyst for that style.

Get Dom out there from the start with Sampson, Harrison, and Jordan and watch the impact he has increase substantially.

I'm a big Dom supporter. I think he could be used better. He brings an intensity that is sometimes lacking. I would like to see him be more consistent. I was also expecting his offensive game to be better at this point in his career. He has shown glimpses of offensive potential but very little this year.

Pointer has absolutely been more positive than negative...obviously needs to develop some confidence and better shooting technique (shoots with right hand on side of ball) but he is definitely an asset....would hope our staff would be working on this..I am glad we have him...

Dom is one of our 6 best players and is often a difference maker. You can't teach his kind of motor and selflessness. True team guy.

But there are situations where he can get neutralized, namely against zone. There were times yesterday where he was catching at the 3 point line and wasn't even looking at the basket. You can't be that kind of non-threat because it allows the whole zone to cheat.

The unfortunate thing about Dom as a junior (and you can put Jakarr as a sophomore in this group) is that they haven't enhanced there offensive skillset from one year to the next. Very inconsistent game to game. When the game speeds up and spaces out and dom's athleticism can take over he can look like our most important player. When sampson's jumper is falling and he gets a few dunks in transition, ditto. But neither has really added to their toolbox ways to impact the game offensively when the natural flow of the game isn't going their way, and that limits both of them at times.

I admire his hustle, skill set, and over all hard play. At times I think he loses his focus and discipline and runs himself out of the play. Once he starts to running around chasing he hurts his game. With help from the staff he can become better.

He is to much of a non factor on offense to get more than 25 minutes. His hustle is great but his smarts and skill are lacking. I love him, I love all the guys so this isnt meant to bash him. I said this last year and I still feel the same, Dom should play more like a power forward on offense, instead he plays like a point guard.Use your strength and athleticism to beat people inside. Why has dom never set a ball screen in his 2+ years here? He has to make himself a more useful offensive player by setting screens and crashing the boards. It would be great if any player on the team, not just dom, had post up game.

Dom is very similar to Willie Glass of the Mullin teams with one exception. They both play good defense, rebound, pressure the ball and take the ball to the rim and are weak outside shooters. The difference is that Willie never took shots from 18 ft. and this made him a better player. The recent telecast of the SJU vs. Geo. 1984 game showed that Willie and a couple of Geo. backcourt men never took outside shots. They were in the game for defensive purposes and were willing to sacrifice their offensive game. Although the worst shooter on the team this type of player usually led his team in shooting percentage. Is today's athlete willing to do the same? Does the coaching staff ask this of players?

I will admit that he does play good defense, but good defense alone will not get it done at the next level. He needs to develop his shooting which is absolutely horrible, and has not improved since his freshmen year! Frankly I would not have him starting.

Pointer is no Willie Glass!!!!!!!!!!! When Glass jumped for a rebound, it took him a week to come down. He was an incredible athlete!!!

I have never been a dom fan. He has no offense and a poor bball iq. We are 4 on 5 in offense when he is on the court.

Yes, and it was a pleasant surprise a couple games ago when he went for 15 points or so. However with Sampson giving nothing and nothing out of the center
and Dom with very little it is up to 2 guards for the offense and that is not going to work unless you are Connecticut.. It's about time Sampson starts picking up
the slack. I have been disappointed in him other than some highlight dunks. I thought getting stuffed by Grant against Cuse would motivate him to modify his
game, but nothing yet.

I'm not beating this point to death like yesterday, but how he is allowed to fully dribble the ball up the court or around the perimeter? How is this allowed by the coaching staff. I'm about the same size as Dom, my coach would have pulled me from the game once I did it once, let alone the infinite amount of times I've seen it since Pointer has been a Johnnie.

We have Jordan, Branch, Harrison, Greene....why would Pointer be allowed to continue to do this?

Aside from that point (that I posted alone on purpose) I'm not going to have a complete knee jerk reaction to yesterday's game, which was probably his worst in his career here.

He plays with heart, he usually defends well, and, when he stays within the parameters of how he SHOULD play, he's a very useful player. He's a poor man's Lavar Postell.

Good point, and when Opecka is in the line up its 3 against 5!

I don't see Willie Glass, I see Paris Horne. Horne was a gifted athlete with a totally raw offensive game. He ended up a good defender and a 3 point threat. He couldn't shoot as a freshman. He worked hard on that part of his game. Either Dom hasn't worked on his shooting enough, or just can't shoot despite trying.

We will continue to rip individual players as part of the root cause for losing until we run off a couple of big wins in a row. When we win, Pointer is a glue type of guy with high value, when we lose, the problem is (pick one or more) ___________________ (Pointer,Harrison, Sanchez, Greene, Branch, Sampson, Achiuwa, Obekpa, Jordan-hands off for now, Lavin)

Thats a knock on paris Horne. He averaged 16 points as a sophomore. A player that was under control and didnt try to force things. Knew his role.
