Sir Dom is #2...

SJU61982

Well-known member
.. on ESPN's list of the 10 best names in college basketball.

Sir'Dominic Pointer (11.1 points per game, 7.3 rebounds per game, 3.1 assists per game, 2.3 steals per game and 1.9 blocks per game) had two choices in life. Evolve into a multidimensional college basketball guard or sail across the Atlantic Ocean as a 16th Century explorer in search of new lands. Also, his middle name is Denzel. Seriously.

Interesting. He always pops up on these lists, didnt know about the middle name.

On another front, i wonder if he is starting to move up the SJU ranks in steals or blocks. Gotta be on the radar

He is within reach of 3rd all time steals (Mullin at 213) and 4th all time blocks (Mullin's buddy at 152). He's at 175 in steals and 124 in blocks.

At the risk of being told to Google it B) , who is Mullin's buddy?

There is a 3rd Italian kid we are pursuing who would make this list. He would be a transfer from WU and have 2 years of eligibility left. His name is Rocco Grancoglione.

Bill Wennington, would be my guess. He was a 7-footer, and played the same 4 years as Chris.

2 guys ahead of Mullin in steals? I'd say Mark Jackson was one, but don't know the other. I'm guessing Sealy?

2 of the top 3 in blocks for us are Obekpa and Werdann, but I can't think of the third player.

Yes, Wennington = Mullin's buddy. Werdan and McKoy are 2 and 3 in blocks - I'm using the 2011 media guide - assume CO is at the top of the list by now. Buchanan and Sealy (out of reach with 238) are 2 and 3 in steals. A few guys would be higher on these lists had they played four years and I doubt they tracked some of these stats prior to the 80's. Still, Sir Dom is making his mark in these two key defensive categories.

I'm not sure what year they began recording blocked shots, but that front line of Searcy, Rellford, and Beaver Smith blocked a heck of a lot of shots. George Johnson got his share also.

Searcy and Rellford never played together. Rellford played two years starting in 75. Searcy's last year was 74. Front lines:

G Johnson, W McKoy and K Winfree in 78
Johnson, Rellford and Winfree in 77.
Johnson, Rellford and Beaver Smith in 76.
Johnson, B Smith and Glen Williams in 75.
E Searcy, B Smith and G Williams in 74.

thanks.. I had just started following SJU then. Do you know when blocked shots were recorded as a stat?

As an aside, Winfree never gets mentioned much here. He was pretty good.

I thought this was a thread about how Pointer is #2 on team in regards to importance.

Reeling it back here to SDP. Have to hand it to him...while his handle is not great, it is much improved from his earlier years. And his FT accuracy is waaaay better than past years (witness end of Prov game). Kudos to him for obvious time in the gym, and whichever assistant coach (I assume) helped him out on both those skills. Now about that hair....

Wow! Ed Searcy! He and I went to grammar school together, Our Lady Queen of Angels in East Harlem. Along with Japeth Trimble, we were good friends in school and our moms were also good friends. He went to Power Memorial and I went to Hayes and we lost contact with each other and never re-established contact again. You've made me want to now reach out to see if I can locate him on Social Media. My, how time flies.

The older guys can verify but I believe Searcy started at Duquesne and came home to SJU. As Fun dutifully noted, he was in a frontcourt with Beaver Smith (I hope I'm not wrong again). He could absolutely soar, and I thought he's one of our all-time excellent players. I believe he was on a taxi squad of sorts with the Celts and played a handful of game. Jap Trimble! Went to MAryland - had to check - good college player, no?

What a great article GilPaultz! Man the internet is friggin amazing, reading an article that was digitized and reads like it was yesterday. Searcy was a huge recruit for Duqesne then. Side note: Willis Reed pulls down 36 rebounds and 36 points vs. Unseld-man-rock in one of those epic Knick-Bullets games.

Paultz, great article. Thanks! Jap Trimble was a good player for Maryland. He and Searcy together at Power Memorial were a formidable front court.
