Shamorie wins the Haggerty Award!

Congrats to Shamorie. Hope you repeat and lead us into the Tourney.

Shamorie Ponds admitted this will be a big week. A Combine invite will reveal a lot of where he stands. Did say he's "60/40" with edge to staying in draft, but that could obviously change. #sjubb

Is there a way that this program can go a day without some upending news? Honestly, does this happen anywhere else?

YES, congrats to Shamorie. Hopefully he will win it again next year!

But, that quote is a little disconcerting. Hope the best for him. If that means it is best for him to go, then so be it. But if he does, let's hope it is not under false expectations (ala Omar Cook).

Just have to wait and see how this plays out. His Dad seemed pretty adamant that he wasn't leaving this year to be a 2nd round pick. If he performs well enough at combine to be a number one pick, we can only wish him well. Obviously would be a setback for next year, but would also be an indication staff can get talent to the NBA.

There are 236 players that have declared early for the draft. Add in seniors and international players vying for 60 spots. Does anyone see Shamorie getting drafted?

Stunning ‘news’. Hope the best for Shamorie. That he accurately assesses his draft status.
I doubt there was much the Staff could’ve done to ‘prepare’ for this happening. Top PGs weren’t coming here if Shamorie was still here.
This is one of those tsunami waves.
It happens.
Best of luck to the kid and his family.

Shamorie had a great year but let's face it he won this award largely on his performance back to back against Duke and Villanova. Easily the two most prominent opponents on the schedule and two of the biggest brands in the sport. Those 2 games won this award for him.

Why is it disconcerting? Newsflash Shamorie Ponds doesn't exist for the purposes of making SJU fans happy. It's his life not yours. If SJU isn't good enough to withstand his early departure then that is not his problem that is the problem of the HC and staff.

Did I hear 12 game losing streak?
Lose Owens, Ahmed and Ponds and this coach is "contemplating" a coaching change.
You can't make this stuff up.

And he gains "what" by returning?

If he can get drafted in first round, he gains very little by returning and we should all wish him well and thank him for coming to SJU and giving us two very good years. If (as most of the NBA scouts seemed to be saying) he will at best be a second round pick, he can benefit by coming back and leading a much deeper team to the NCAA with all the exposure that entails, while showing improvement in his defense and 3 point shooting where other teams are not as able to collapse on him because of outside shooting threats posed by Clark, Dixon & Figueroa. We can only wait and see and hope he makes a good decision, based on his own best interests.

No sh&% Sherlock. Read what I wrote. It is disconcerting for the program. I wish him the best regardless of what happens. But, if he leaves I hope it isn't misguided.

Agree totally that Shamorie must do what’s best for him and his family. If he has a real opportunity of being a 1st round pick—he must go.
But no way, ANY staff can be blamed for the surprise loss of a star PG.
Not too many programs can recruit a top prospect in to sit on the pine while their stud PG remains on the team.
This thread full of gripes that we’re too guard-heavy and pining for that Grad ‘big’.
Guess this morning, we’re not pining for that ‘big’.
Funny.
Don’t get me wrong, losing Shamorie for next year would be huge—but Simon, Dixon, LJ, Trimble, GW are the ‘depth’ at guard/wing. None is Shamorie level, but staff can’t be blamed for ‘this’.
And odds are still long, he’ll get solid feedback that he’ll be a 1st round pick.
Let’s not panic.
LOL where did he say Ponds exists for the fans? He just said it was disconcerting, or upsetting news.
Yeah and how does that go against what I wrote. Why would any SJU fan be upset, did Ponds get cancer? Upset about him possibly pursuing his dream, that is an odd circumstance to be upset about.

Let me explain. Remember Angel Delgado last year, declared then everyone reported that he was staying in the draft. All of these SHU fans on blogs wrote how "He wasn't ready" "He is getting bad advice" etc. Really? What do you think SHU fans were more concerned about, Delgado's future or the fact that SHU was losing a key player off of their team for the coming year?

In other words did they care about Delgado or SHU? Once Delgado is gone do you think they will care much what happens to him. Fans substitute their own self interest for the player that they reportedly "care about."

Now Delgado ended up staying, quite frankly he gained little since his draft status didn't change. I can assure you no SHU fan cares little anyway because that was never their concern to begin with.
