Shamorie Ponds Q&A - NY Post

Great article. Love his answer to playing for NY’s college team “...has been probably one of the best decisions of my life.”
I’m thinking that IF we finish the year strong with at least a 3-1 run next 4 games, do well in the BET, and get to the NCAAs or go deep into the NIT—he jumps to the NBA. As a fan, I would salute him and wish him great success.

College teams, especially those who are not one of the bluebloods, live in a Catch 22. The bigger the season your star has, the more he thinks about moving on. I think Shamorie benefits from one more year, but sounds like he is a risk to leave.

Yeah very cool kid. Seen mucho in his young life. I wish him the best.

I don’t think you have to worry about the NCAA Tournament. ;) I think any time your star player is already driving a luxury European car you have worry he may be putting the car before the horse regardless of draft status.

You may have a point. I hope the kid gets lucky. The NCAAs are a possibility, but we’d have to run the table, going 4-0 to close out the season, and win at least 2 games in the BET. A 20-14 overall record and 9-12 in the BET would I think get us in.

When Braziller tweet "a very good read coming for St. John's fans" I expected to see Ponds say he was 100% returning.

It was a nice read. Ponds seems like a good kid.

The health and momentum of our program's rebuild will be impacted greatly by whether he stays or leaves.

It's a big deal.

Being from Brooklyn, I salute Shamorie. He sounds like a kid that is hitting all the right notes. In his neighborhood, it is so easy to go the wrong way, thank God for his mom, grandma and g grandma, they are terrific folks.

I've love to have Shamorie with a better surrounding cast, I hope he comes back.

Very true. Just reading ‘tea leaves’ from the interview (yeah, I’m an Asian mystic), I get the sense he’d try his luck in the NBA draft IF he and the team go out on a high note, winning say 7 of the next 9 games. Given his size and the things he has to work on—like his D—I would think he would have to perform at stellar levels the remainder of the Season to attract solid NBA interest.
CM and Mitch will advise him I think.
At this point, it’s up in the air, let’s play the games.

I think he will check with his family, our coaching staff, and then make the proper decision. I hope he chooses to stay at St. John's but that is me being selfish. Whatever he chooses, a couple of things are certain. First he will be a REDMAN FOREVER, and he will be fine where ever he is. When a kid with his cred chooses his MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER, and GREAT GRANDMOTHER, to have dinner with. that sums up what the kid is made of. I pray that God always looks out for Shamorie, He's special.

Nice to see the intelligence quotient of the posters has gone up over the last 5 years. I remember when Mo Harkless unexpectedly declared for the NBA draft there were many posters who claimed this would be good for St. J's as it would attract more high level recruits to sign with us. How did that work out? Speaking from a St. J's perspective it would be great to have Shamorie back for at least one more year.

Good points Bama. The 1-and-done mills like KY NC KS Duke can shrug when a 5* stud bolts after one year. That's a killer for us, as are 'early' departures' like that of Sampson's and potentially that of Shamorie.
At the same time, we have to realize the internal stresses (eco needs mixed with NBA dreams) these kids deal with and wish them the best.
I agree though that it would be risky for Shamorie to leave after this year. Hopefully, he thinks hard and long about the move. I'm sure CM and the Staff will advise him well.
Yes, it'd be a bummer for our chances next year, but if such a decision is in Shamorie's best interests--IF he's played so well at Season's-end that the NBA has solid interest in him, then we should support his move.
Let's play the games.

@NYPost_Brazille
St. John's guard Shamorie Ponds' father Shawn on his son's future: “You got to remember, when you’re winning more people got their eye on you. Coming back could be a really good thing.” Sounds like he will test waters, but no sense there is a rush to go pro. More coming. #sjubb

Family doing right thing exploring options & looking at big picture. Good for them!

I appreciate the respectful and transparent way they are reacting.

Sounds like his father has a good idea and will help his son make a decision in the best interest of Shamorie. That is the way it should be. This is not a decision for handlers and agents and all that nonsense. If he is a 1st Round Pick no way anyone in that position would turn down that kind of guaranteed money. 2nd round or beyond is a little different. Hopefully. SP and his father will listen to the right people.
