IMO you need 3 consistent scorers to win games in the BE. I think we all can agree that Posh, Champ and Wheeler are our “Big 3”. Taking a look at the games we lost by 6pts or less, besides the DePaul game (no defense) one of our top 3 had a poor shooting game. By no means is this post to trash the players. They are kids and you should expect some off nights. This just shows that we were pretty close to having a decent season. FTs were a big issue in these close games:

SJU Losses by 6pts or Less

Seton Hall - lost 66-60
Team FT% - 65% (11/17)
Posh - 10pts FG% 27.3% (3/11)
Champ - 9pts FG% 21.4% (3/14)
Wheeler- 13pts FG % 46.2% (6/13)

Providence - lost 86-82
Team FT% - 36% (3/11)
Posh - 29pts FG% 65% (13/20)
Champ - 8pts FG% 36.4% (4/11)
Wheeler- 16pts FG% 63.6% (7/11)

UConn - lost 63-60
Team FT% - 54% (7/13)
Posh - DNP
Champ - 13pts FG% 37.5% (6/16)
Wheeler- 13pts FG% 27.8% (5/18)

Creighton - lost 81-78
Team FT% - 56% (5/9)
Posh - 13pts FG% 54.5% (6/11)
Champ - 8pts FG% 18.8% (3/16)
Wheeler- 3pts FG% 10% (1/10)

DePaul - lost 99-94
Team FT% - 59% (13/22)
Posh - 18pts FG% 66.7% (8/12)
Champ - 26pts FG% 37% (10/27)
Wheeler- 20pts FG% 61.5% (8/13)

agree.  We are sooooo close but for one reason or another couldn’t put it all together.   As of yet.  We can in the big east tourney.

Nice work good stuff. Very disappointing season but wouldnt want to throw everything away and start all over.

Good work Stjohnnie 75.  The lower finishing teams shoot themselves in the foot. You play great on the road and get beat by a 50 foot buzzer beater, it's bad luck. If you shoot under 60% from the line, and even under 50% on one occasion, it's on you. Depaul had 6 losses of 5 points or less, including one possession losses at Butler, Seton Hall and Providence. Good teams find a way even on off nights. They bear down in the last 5 minutes, make smart plays, and move on.  Those at the bottom talk about what might have been.

Great job, St Johnnie 75.  I was wondering about the comparative stats of certain players in losses v wins, your post is a good highlight of that.

To me the story of the season is that the team just didn't have quite enough to get over the hump, though in different games it was a different flavor of what was missing.  2 games without Posh, 1 game without Champ, 2 games without Soriano, all close losses. In other games it was just not enough from Champ. In some it was the coach's decision to play offensively challenged lineups for stretches because he doesn't trust some of his scorers to play adequate defense and his defenders don't all play adequate offense.

Team wound up with a whole lot of close losses because it just didn't have quite enough to get over the hump.  Win all of those and it's a top-25 team.  Win half of them and it's an NCAA tournament team.  Win hardly any of them (as we did) and it's a frustrating and disappointing year.

Hopefully next season will offer a more well-rounded roster that will get over the hump more often and make the clutch baskets and get the clutch stops that make the difference in so many games.

Anyway could be worse - we could be Georgetown.

Agree.  What concerns me the most...is with a lot (if not most) of these close losses we didn't even get a halfway decent look at the basket in key spots.  @Indiana, UConn, Creighton immediately come to mind where we either had a turnover or a VERY low percentage shot in one possession games in the closing seconds. I realize that we are not likely to get a wide open look in these scenarios, but you do need to be able to get a look that gives you a 30%+ chance.  IIRC, there were several key possessions late in games where Posh and Champ didn't even touch the ball.

We basically were Georgetown in 2015-16 so I guess from that perspective this was a good season.

Besides the 5 BE games I highlighted in the original post, it’s crazy that there were an additional 3 games that were single possession games that we lost also:

Indiana: Wheeler only played 9 mins
Pittsburgh: Champ DNP
UConn (first game that went into OT): Incredibly unlucky tip out of bounds, followed by a questionable foul call.

Man what could have been!

Sadly far to often its been the 2-3 what could have been moments that separate SJU from their name being called on Selection Sunday.  It's tiresome at this point.

Our record (Net 67) in quad 1 and 2 is 4-13, compared with 9-11 and 9-9 for Xavier (Net 40) and Creighton (Net 66) respectively.  That is why we are not on an NCAA tournament bubble, but they are.
