The Red Storm got off to a good start in their class with four-star Shamorie Ponds, but there is still a lot of work to do for Chris Mullin to get the roster back where he wants it. While most make a big deal of recruiting the City, Mullin is also going some non-tradtional routes, and that could pay big dividends late.

Easily the top remaining target is Alkins. The five-star New York native is now in North Carolina, but St. John’s is considered in his top two with NC State. The Red Storm have put in a lot of work here, but with Alkins anything is possible. St. John’s has a need on the wing next year, so while it won’t be easy, Alkins could be a huge lift for the class.

Also there are two other wings on the radar in junior college standout Bashir Ahmed, another New York native, has numerous high-major options, and the Red Storm are really focused on him hoping to add his scoring.

Then there is German Richard Freudenberg. He is considered one of the top young players in Europe, and St. John’s is the commanding leader for his services. It is possible that Freudenberg could be a four-star caliber player after viewing tape this year.

@BSnowScout: I take a look at five schools that could make a big jump in the late signing period

Do you think we will release any players currently under scholarship to make room for possible recruits, and if so who?

Balamou/Jones can be grad transfers at the end of this year. I guess both of their situations depends on how this year plays out.

I wonder if being on Dream Team 1, which ignited wide scale interest in basketball around the world, helps Mullin in recruiting European players, where their coaches would certainly know who he is.

Hi Beast!
Always enjoy your posts!

One would think
1. Chris Mullin's overall excellence in basketball history (Dream Team included) is a major plus - and
2. with the NYC-Europe closeness and cultural connections - and
3.current players successful here =
a wonderful pipeline has been/is being constructed
4.two of the best college recruiters in our family...

I believe our Coach emphasized NYC/local players in his press conference but embraced recruits beyond sooo

Hence we have ties to the best of NYC, national, JC, Europe - have we ever been in such a desirable position before...think not.

Promising by any account. And of course as we win/recruit/win...the pipeline flows all the more - better than North to Alaska!

And thanks Mr. P for this great topic!

And there's always the post season waiver wire where immediate grad transfers and one-year sit outs are a plenty.

I thought last year was the end of the grad transfer immediate eligibility thing.

They talked about it last spring but it didn't happen. See Everett Golston, Eli Carter, Mawookie and Durand as recent examples.

While Ponds is the only player we signed in 2016 let us not forget we have 3 very good players sitting out who are currently practicing with the team.
6 10 Tennessee transfer Owens who was either a 3 or 4 star recruit out of high school in 2014 and 4 star recruits Yakwe and Lovett. As of this minute we are adding 4 very talented players next season at different positions.
We loose Mvouika , Johnson and perhaps Belamou who is a senior. We are presently adding far more than we are loosing.
While Alkins, Ahmed and Richard F are all wings Alkins would provide the biggest splash, Ahmed may be the most ready to contribute from day 1 and Richard F would be the 4 year steady presence.
Any one of these three would be a very welcome fifth addition to the 2016 roster. It is truly wonderful to have options. :)

If we don't get the miracle of Alkins then Ahmed and Freudenburg are vital to replace Johnson and Mvouika.

I respect what you say but disagree that Two of the three are vital. We are adding two very good guards in Ponds and Lovett to play with Mussini and hopefully Ellison will improve. Don't like to hear he is in a boot and on crutches tonight though. Ahmed would be the perfect addition to Ponds and Lovett as he will be ready to play from day 1 at the 2 and 3. As I said any one of the three would be real good.

Don't believe they are the last group aloud. Don't even think they are the last group allowed. ;) :)

Holy crap. The irony of it is I missed tonight's game because of a literacy grad class.

Pretty sure Felix got screwed out of a redshirt, so he's done this season. Didn't Lavin play him when Jordan went AWOL?

100% agree here. Not only are guys like Durand Johnson & Ron Mvouika useful for balancing scholarships, but their experience is invaluable on a young team.

I'm really hoping that we get Ahmed. Not only is he a good player, but he will be ready right away coming in as a junior and will help to balance out our classes a little bit.

Sense he will be a nice Christmas present. :)
