Not sure if this was posted elsewhere, but a good read, and mentions Sampson and Hooper.

A few tidbits.

I read it this morning coming in. Nice read.

Thanks for the Post Nice to read positive things

Good little article. I hope for the same success for Sampson and Hooper. McGarry is a good one. Has a lot of David Lee's game in him.

I personally did not know the history among these 3 kids. Nice to see. And, YES, hopefully McGary's success rubs off.

Thanks for posting the article I really enjoyed it, I was surprised that he and Sampson are so close. Hooper with those two guys had to be a real trip.

How the hell anyone can't be pulling for this kid tonight is beyond me - well unless you are a Louisville fan. Great story. I love that a kid recognized what was wrong and worked to fix it, instead of letting it be an enabling force to justify bad choices in behavior/action. Gives me a renewed reason to watch tonight's game.

Actually, after reading the story which is touching, I wonder how come Lavin would have missed offering McGARY, if he was there scouting Sampson? Seems like he and Sampson were BFF and Lavin might have been able to take advantage of that?

McGARY would have been a better choice than Obepka since he already has more developed skills.

Not knowing the full story but, I'm curious to know.

Anyone know if we offered McGARY?

Just stop.

McGary was the #1 ranked recruit in the nation for awhile. You realize that when the staff was chasing Jakarr at Brewster, McGary wasn't even getting any playing time. He wasn't starting and his coach had a quick hook on him.

Jakarr was the best player on the team and Nerlens Noel became regarded as the best big man around.

McGary's stock plumetted.

With that said, how could anyone who watched them say he was better than Obekpa? Obekpa had an outstanding senior year, tore up IS8 and won MVP in practically every tournament he played in.

Maybe he is more developed skills because he's months away from turning 21 years old.

He is 100% better than Obekpa. And that's not a knock on CO.

And of course we kicked the tires on McGary, and "offered". McGary's other finalists were Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Yes his stock was sky high and then dropped some, but everyone in the country "offered" him.
He just wasn't that hot for us

Are we going to berate coach next because he didn't "offer" the Harrison twins?

False.

SJU, if you could have either McGary or Obekpa for next season, you would take Obekpa?

I agree with SJU98. How can you say he is 100% better than Obekpa? Did anyone else see McGary get pushed around against strong Louisville big men? He cant stay out of foul trouble he cant block and rebound as well as Obekpa, and all he can do better than chris is score. I would rather have Obekpa!

OK, let' see then. Lavin did offer. That was my question. Not getting a kid who preferred Michigan to St John's is not a issue. Michigan is one of the best schools in the country. Even Lavin can't get every kid. Just thought the Sampson-McGary relationship might have had a impact, not that it did!

21 years old. What does that mean and is it relevant? Sanchez is going to be almost 25 next year.

And, McGary is a better player than CO right now. That doesn't mean CO is a bad player but, McGARY might be opting to go pro this spring. CO has a ways to go.

McGary.
I didn't realize that equated to being the 100% better player.

I dont know why we didn't offer, but Jakarr's first year their Mitch was a role player. I believe Brewster's starting lineup was something like this: Nadir Tharpe (Kansas), Eli Carter (Rutgers), Max, Jakarr, and Marcus Kennedy (Was at Nova last year, think he transfered to SMU). McGarry was really just an energy guy, but it was obvious he was a player. It wasn't really until that summer when he blew up. Maybe Lavin didn't think he was a top player or maybe he didn't think STJ was a good fit. Personally i'm happy with Obekpa and excited to see how his game grows

In terms of potential career earnings, I'd rather be Obekpa than McGary. But I'd stay four years if I were Obekpa. Next year get his rebound numbers up, then bring up the scoring average junior and senior year. If he gets double-digit rebounds and 5 blocks a game, along with even 10 points per game he'll be a high pick.

Then land endorsements blocking cans of Pepsi and happy meals in commercials. And any medications that block pain.

When I said "100% better" I didn't necessarily mean in every facet of the game. What I should have said is right now I think Mcgary is clearly the better player.

I think there's a real debate however as to who has more long term potential, or a better shot at an NBA career. Reasonable minds can disagree on that. CO has a lot of upside.

But dropping 25pts and 14reb on Kansas in a huge tournament game is a pretty nice coming out party. At this point even with his defense, CO can't affect a game to that degree.

Recruiting Big Men is a difficult task for College Coaches since they are tough to evaluate.. Being tall is already a plus for any kid over 6'10".. Over the years, other than Wennington, we really never had a true Center, that could actually play.. Hamilton was ok but, not big enough at 6'8".. Berry was really a power forward, not a true center.

Roberts had a few big kids who weren't really BE players, Jasulonis, etc.

I was just wondering about McGARY since he has major game right now, even with the fouls...He could go NBA because he can shoot, not just throw it up there. He's not a shot blocker but, so what?

For those who think he didn't show much against L'ville, I didn't thing Dieng did much for the Cards either. Hit a couple of shots down the stretch that helped ..

BTW, just my opinion, I think Trey Burke is overated. He stunk vs Syracuse and didn't contribute much vs L'ville, despite taking a lot of shots. He seems to ignore his teammates a lot while shooting plenty. Kinda like our Phil Greene. I think Otto Porter will be the better pro as he's more team oriented.

And, Siva is a better player than Smith on L'ville.. I think there's a team for Siva in the NBA, he's got that intangible of being a WINNER! Smith is too out of control.
