Is Rice having a conniption?.
I know this will be unpopular, but I really think teams like Rutgers, Providence, and DePaul do themselves a disservice by being in the Big East. They really belong in the A10 or C-USA. That's where they can seriously compete each year and not be a bottom feeder 99% of the time. Yes Prov. is a founding member, but history and tradition means squat with all the realignment.
Well at the very least, for DePaul and Providence these would be good moves IMO. These are teeny tiny schools almost no one knows about and consistently make up the bottom of the conference for a while now. For every good year they have like a decade of bad ones to follow. I realize Prov got those 2 major recruits, but I think it's only 1 of them now since the other is out for the season injured. If they played in the A10 they would have big rivalries with URI, UMass, etc. and I think they would gain more notoriety IMO. They have a much better shot winning the A10 and getting an auto bid to the tourney than getting an at large in the Big East where they are always worse than at least 10 teams usually more. The school literally has like 2 or 3,000 students. It just can't possibly generate the fanbase, the popularity, and the consistency of winning as they currently are. I really think Providence could be like a Temple in the A10. They would still be among the top choices for New England schools...only UConn would really be ahead of them. They are a small fish in a huge pond...they need a smaller, more winnable pond to succeed in. DePaul is even more irrelevant than Providence IMO. When you think of Big East teams they are the last that comes to mind and it's been a long time since they really were relevant. It too would benefit from the A10 and gain more exposure.
How much longer can you be content with being at the bottom before you realize there are just too many great schools to compete with and it's time to move to a more appropriate conference? I'd rather be known as a very good mid-major making tourney's consistently than a Big East team that is forgotten about and almost never plays meaningful games anymore. The money Providence got from downsizing its basketball program can go to more important things, as sports are not prominent at PC.
