Rothstein's Big East Breakdown

I see he has the Johnnies as his "sleeper" team for the upcoming season. Rothstein also has us finishing at 10th in the conference. I believe we'll end up amongst the top 7 teams in the conference.

5. WHO IS THE SLEEPER?

St. John’s. The Red Storm don’t have any players on their team with any sort of winning experience but they’re really, really talented. JaKarr Sampson has the ability to be one of the better players in the Big East and he could form a potentially lethal front line with junior college transfer Orlando Sanchez and freshman shot blocker Chris Obekpa. Sophomore D’Angelo Harrison will play more point guard and should be one of the better perimeter players in the conference. A major key for Steve Lavin’s team? Production off the bench. St. John’s has star power with Harrison and Sampson but they need a few valuable reserves to step to the forefront. Keep an eye on burly freshman forward Christian Jones. The 6-foot-7 Jones wasn’t highly recruited but he’s got all the tools to be an effective piece to Lavin’s puzzle.

EDIT: I forgot to put the "n" in 'breakdown.' I guess one of the mods can fix that faux pas.

I dont see how he things Harrison is going to play more point guard. We have Greene and Branch so at the very least he would be the third option and Balamou could even play some point in a pinch. He can not be any worse then Stith was last year. And I have a feeling when he is not at the shooting guard D'Angelo will be getting his rest on the bench and staying fresh and saving his energy for the last 7 or 8 minutes of the 2nd half when we will need him.

It did wonders for Dwight Hardy.

Lavin will find a way especially before BE conference play. I really believe he wants to showcase D'Angelo.

He already showed a knack for getting into the lane. If he can get a little assist game going, he could sneak into the late first round.

I definitely remember some instances of D'lo making some really sweet passes in traffic last season. His passing didn't to seem a problem. He's got talent for it - which is why I understand why Lavin will want to push D'Lo to get some experience in that department. If he learns some PG skills we all know it'll add to his marketability for his post-university career - wherever he ends up.

I also remember that he could get in trouble when he was driving into the tree-like defenders and trying to create his own shot or draw a foul. He seemed to force it a bit. He definitely has to work on his decision making with regard to that.... I presume it's a very fine art, and hopefully he has refined his craft to have a solid professional career.

Anyway, i'm looking forward watching him this season.

I think it is pretty simple. We all envisioned Greene playing Pg until Branch comes on board. I think instead, we'll more than likely be seeing D'Lo bringing the ball up with Greene at the SG spot. I actually think this should work well. Greene is certainly more of a SG than a Pg with his quickness and scoring ability going to the hole. I thought D'Lo's passing was better. Just switch them up andit should work well. I still think Branch is the best PG of the bunch, but when he comes on board, we can figure that out.

If D'Lo is bringing up the ball, Borgault might be getting more playing time earlier than perhaps we envisioned if Greene hasn't improved his outside shot this offseason. I would presume that some of our small forwards that will be getting playing time can also slash with the ball to the hoop. My guess is that that outside shooting might be more important on the floor than another slasher.

It's a good problem to have - that we finally have options to pick and choose - Thank you Lavin!

Agree totally.

If DLo plays point the only person it will hurt is Greene. Personally I think the move would add to our fire power.

It could also hurt Branch the 2nd semester.

Branch has been waiting to get into a game Branch and Harrison will be a lethal back court and Harrison can showcase his SG abilities in the Big East after showcasing his PG abilities in the Non-conference schedule. Lavin might be trying to get Harrison to leave for the NBA soon so he has more room on his roster and more players in the NBA.

I don't think Lavin would ever rush someone to the NBA, but he would certainly try to help a player's chances in the League. I think that's definitely part of adding PG skills to Harrison's game. He'll need a little polish on his ball handling and his passing (I think his spectacular passes are great, he just needs to work on some of the more elementary / fundamental plays) to get a real shot in the NBA. With his shooting skills, he's already got a head start.

I can't figure out why, but I just think people are overlooking Greene in a big way. Despite not being a natural PG, he was asked to fill the role by Dunlap last year and had some very good games for the Red Storm. 14 points and 5 assists against Villanova, 14 points and 4 assists against #2 Syracuse, 18 points and 7 assists against Pitt. I know he had some rough games to end the season, but I think he's fully capable of taking a big step forward and being a big factor for St. John's this year.

+1 Phil will be the full time PG next year.. D'Angelo will only play point if he needs a breather and once Branch joins he will be a full time SG...

If DLo has a year at lead guard he'll be gone so Greene and Branch needn't worry too much.

I agree.

I think we'll see a much different Greene this year. He's bulked up. And I think he'll come into this year much more confident.

He was a pleasant surprise for me last year. I think those mental mistakes that he showed was him just learning on the job. He played alot of PG in high school. I think Allocco will have a really positive impact on his game.
