"An effortless scorer, Ponds should have an excellent chance to lead all Big East freshmen in scoring this season. A shooting guard trapped in a point guard’s body at 6-1, this Brooklyn native has Cuttino Mobley-type ability and should be a double-figure scorer throughout the duration of his college career."

Did you see the where the other freshman in the article are playing at this year? Never a bad thing when you are mentioned with freshman who will be playing at schools like Duke, Kentucky, Michigan St., Kansas, UCLA & Arizona if you ask me.

I watched this kid closely in high school and I have been saying it for more than a year now (1) we were lucky he wanted to stay home and sign with St. John's and (2) Shamorie Ponds can play and that includes schools like UCLA and Kansas had they recruited him. He and Lovett will form a deadly combination in the backcourt with Bashir at the wing. Yakwe will have a feast feeding off these guys. I am as excited as Chris Mullin in anticipation!

That was Chris's reaction when the refs told him he couldn't sit on the scorer's table. ;)

I sense the majority of the board feels that Lovett will be the better player at least at the start.

Lovett has a year of Division 1 practice so he may be better at first, but nothing is going to change my high opinion of Ponds. I saw him play three times last year and really took a liking to him. He is a team player, very calm and an outstanding student of the game. When he is on defense he has great anticipation and I feel like he can score against almost anyone with his ability to go the hole, pull up or make a 3. He is not a point guard level passer yet but see no reason he can't improve his passing as he sees the court extremely well. I saw him against Alvarado when he stole his inbounds pass to seal the win. In the PSAL semifinals, I think he scored an effortless 35 points and in Albany against a much bigger team and even though he was in foul trouble still won the Most Outstanding Player. Then there was the nail biter against Chino Hills one of the top teams in the country when he went point for point against Ball. By the time he is done at St. John's, I expect him to be a player we talk about for many years.

I sense that the majority of the board believes that Lovett is the only true pg on the roster and as a result will get the most pt of our 4 guards at the beginning of the season. As time goes on SHAMORIE may get equal or more pt as he will be asked to play 2 positions whereas Lovett will only play one. On a team starved for scoring Shamorie is a g d send.

Great report on Ponds. I'm not in love with tiny 2's, but then again, one of our better all time backcourts were Harvey and Porter neither of whom were giants and both could play. I've always felt that if you can't have size, the next best thing is quickness. If you don't have size or quickness you are generally in trouble in basketball unless you are highly skilled.
