Ian Steere has gifts from God physically. Can catch and punch everything around the rim. St. John's most talented big. Not close. #SJUBB

The instant takeaway from St. John's?

This program will not be reliant on any one player.

Red Storm are now a "system team" under Mike Anderson.

Mustapha Heron and LJ Figueroa both look in tip top shape and both should flourish in Mike Anderson's system.

The other three spots on the floor though, remain major question marks.

David Caraher is down at least 20 pounds since last year at this time.

Can he be a sniper in reserve?

Critical piece if he can provide offense off the bench for St. John's.

A big thing to monitor for St. John's?

Whether or not the NCAA grants waivers for both Ian Steere (NC State) and Rasheem Dunn (Cleveland State).

Both could start.

Early prediction on St. John's starting five: Nick Rutherford, Greg Williams, Mustapha Heron, LJ Figueroa, Josh Roberts. #SJUBB

It will be a stark contrast to "position-less basketball" and hero ball. Let's hope that this year we can be competitive and build on that.

I was actually wondering just the other day if they would bump Heron up front until Steere arrived.

This is great news for him. I took the radio silence about how he looked in practice last year to mean that he was just too slow to compete at this level.

Josh Roberts began to get exposed the more time he logged. he is active around the rim, tries to swat everything in his direction, but also ends up out of position a lot. He is very raw on offense, and unless he has improved would not be a producer. I like him as an off the bench disrupter on defense if he has improved a bit.

Who would you start over him first semester?

We’d have to play smaller ball with guys like Sears, Roberts, Champagnie etc. I think we can survive if Steere isn’t available until December, but it’s not optimal because Steere is the only guy that is really a center on this team and he is big, strong and a great athlete.

We’re not going be reliant on any one player, but we are going to be reliant on 2 players: LJ and Must. Not only are they by far our 2 best players, but they are the only 2 guys that we know can contribute at this level. Especially offensively. Everyone else is a huge question mark. Hopefully some of the other guys will pleasantly surprise us, but right we’ll go as far as LJ and Must take us.

Really happy for the kid. it was going to be an uphill battle for minutes. It probably still will be, but he's buying in and making the most of his chances.
