A year ago St. John's roster was in purgatory.

Now, the Red Storm resembles a unit that is on the rise in the Big East.

St. John's hasn't won any games with its revamped talent base, but it's looking more and more like the 8-24 record that Chris Mullin had in his first year as head coach at his alma mater is set to be nothing more than an aberration.

The Red Storm return four rotation pieces from this past season in Federico Mussini, Malik Ellison, Kassoum Yakwe, Yankuba Sima as well as Tennessee transfer Tariq Owens to go with a recruiting class headlined by Jefferson's Shamorie Ponds -- a top-40 prospect nationally -- and JUCO import Bashir Ahmed (Hutchinson Community College).

Both Ponds and Ahmed are expected to compete for starting spots out of the gate while German import Richard Freudenberg has mismatch ability as a stretch four-man at 6-foot-8.

Redshirt freshman point guard Marcus LoVett will also become eligible for St. John's next season and after watching the lefty perform in practice, it's safe to say that this is the type of player that could fall out of bed and score 10-12 points.

The Red Storm also added two impact transfers last week in Michigan State's Marvin Clark and Arizona's Justin Simon, who both will sit out the upcoming season before becoming eligible in the fall of 2017.

Sources have also told CBS Sports that Arkansas State transfer Anthony Livingston (15.5 points, 9.4 rebounds last season) -- a 6-8 power forward who will be immediately eligible next year -- will visit the Queens campus during the upcoming weekend.

There's no telling how all these pieces are going to mesh, especially early next season when St. John's will have to undertake a brutal early schedule featuring three games in the prestigious Battle 4 Atlantis plus road tilts at Syracuse, Tulane, and Minnesota (Gavitt Games), but the resources are now in place for this once proud program to carve out its place in the Big East.

We are getting such great pub Paultz, and from different sources. Great to see the outside world finally starting to acknowledge what we've been feeling and saying since Chris and the staff have taken over....that the pieces of the puzzle are being put in to place. It's only a matter of time before it translates to success on the court. So pumped about our future! Thanks for consistently posting such positive info.

Yes the attention is nice but only us St John's fans care about publicity at this point. Better the pub comes from winning games than about potential which may or may not be fulfilled.

The positive pub most certainly can't hurt our recruiting efforts.

I agree with both emphases
"Winning games" and "positive pub" are reinforcing rather than mutually exclusive...pretty much seems there's a lot more good coming our way than not...thanks P for the reference!

Can't win games in the offseason, so the pub helps feed the fire.

It's the last week of April. We can't win any games right now (or for the next six months). So, the only other alternatives are no publicity, or bad publicity.

Given those choices, I'll take the positive pub, thank you.

Nice article by Rothstein. However, I would have included the following line.........

"Despite the exciting trajectory, SJU fans are busy lending credibility to Jeff Goodman by bickering about who holds the clipboard during timeouts"

What I was referring to is IMO it is better to sneak up, surprise people if you will than to have teams targeting us for being over hyped. Example would be Notre Dame (ft) or Dallas Cowboys constantly being overrated before the season putting a bulls eye on their back so everyone relishes beating them. On the other hand I do realize that this positive pub does bring us some benefits also.

Man I really look forward to heading to the Garden for a meaningful game in late January or early February... It has been a long time, way too long since we felt relevant. I am not expecting immediate miracles but I do think we are building a program, something more than just a one and done type team. If Chris builds it we will come. We are just starving for a good team to represent St. John's.

Good news for #sjubb. Sima & Mussini are staying on campus this summer to continue training instead of competing on national teams.

This is where I believe Coach Mullin can have an enormous effect on players with their individual workouts over the summer. They will have exactly 8 months from our last game to the beginning of formal team practice on October 15th. A lot of positives can and will happen during this period of time.

That's great news...I figured they'd return to Spain/Italy for the summer. Not only will they benefit from summer workouts, they are showing a strong commitment to the program.

And too themselves.

It sounds like Owens and Lovett really benefited from the workout programs they participated in while they sat out. Mullin mentioned Owens has gained 20 lbs of muscle and Lovett around 10......

I assume both are staying around specifically for strength training. Good to see the commitment. Wherever, Yakwe is hanging his hat this summer he should also have a work out program in one hand. The guys that played got a good feel for the Big East grind and the strength they will need to compete at an elite level.
