Rothstein Article on Simon and Clark

Really nice piece.
Both are emphasizing rebounding and defense - music to my ears!!
I believe that they will both be solid additions to our rotation next year
Can't wait to see them donning the red and white in November

Nice to see the emphasis on defense! Not sure about comparing Simon athletically to Javon kearse in his prime though...

Rothstein | A pair of transfers are hoping to spark a St John’s revival

NAILED IT!

“I would just watch the last season when I was sitting out and there wasn’t enough of a focus on defense, rebounding, and running,” added [sup]Clark[/sup]. “I feel like that’s what Justin and I are going to add. It felt like we would either have a great win or an awful loss and a big reason for that was slow starts in games. That all comes down to having the right mindset on the defensive end of the floor.”

“My confidence level is completely different now,” [sup]Simon[/sup] said. “Marvin and I are committed to defense and we’re committed to rebounding. There’s denying that those are our priorities and that’s what we’re going to add.”

Thanks Paul, you just made Logen's day. Hopefully they will set "vocal" examples of defensive commitment while on the floor because last season Lovett and Ponds were matadors.

Realistically this team can win 7 more games based upon some incremental improvement in defense and Yakwe and Owens playing with some additional maturity. That includes winning the games we should win against inferior competition and a few more over last season. If defense becomes a team priority and it is executed well and a consistent 40, this is a really dangerous team who will score A LOT of points because we have a roster full of guys that are end to end fast and can shoot the ball.

This piece brings fhe most optimistic view to me so far. Paul is right, scoring not a problem. If Clark and Simon now with a year of bulk can help defend bigs, bound and get on guards asses when they get lazy, a seven game improvement not out of the question. Too bad Keita not eligible now

IMO
20 Ws possible
BE tourney W probably
NCAA possible
NIT probable
= realistic goals
Undoubtedly some will comment that's too laudy & unrealistic - others will comment we can surpass these goals...
and you say...

Great to hear the comments from Simon and Clark. They clearly get it. Perhaps that is a reflection of the good programs they came from. Now, we need them to get this message to Marcus and Shamorie and the rest of our team. They play good defense and they go from good players to great players. We did not force enough turnovers and left open too many wide open looks for 3's. Hopefully, a little more effort can tighten this up.

I have a good feeling that these two kids are going to be leaders on this team. I have my fingers crossed.

Clark mentioned running, heck who's better then our speedy Ponds and Lovett. But that means we need to rebound and pitch out, add Simon, another quick guard to the mixture, and no one will stop us getting easy baskets. Isn't that what its all about? Beat the defense downcourt.

We will see about Simon he did not have good stats at Zona, His shooting was not good . He attacks the basket, rebounds and handles the ball pretty good If he took the time off to practice his shooting we could have a nice surprise In high school he was special but it seems his skills did not transfer to D1 big time program He has talent ,size and speed ,hoped he has worked hard if he did which a assume coached has worked on his weaknesses then he could be an impact player for us

To say his stats weren't good is kinda silly. He played 7 minutes a game as a freshman. It's impossible to draw any conclusions from stats based on literally garbage-time minutes per game. He literally took only 46 shots all season and 3 treys. How can you even say his shooting isn't good from that sample-size?

look stats do not lie if it is over 2 games or 20 His foul shooting was also bad So lets agree his shooting is at best needs to improve If he shot like Ponds he would still be playing for
MS That being said I like that he is playing for us was just trying to say if he improved those weaknesses he could be special for us

Agree on the very limited sampling and a year to improve.

I did look at his stats and what did make me cringe a bit was his 9-21 42.9 FT%

Small base but reminded me of Yakwe's freshman FT'S and even then he was at 52%, but seemed to feel more like 25% when watching

I think he'll surprise more than dissappoint

A very long time ago I dated this girl who went to Boston College. BC has some pretty hot girls especially Irish girls. I'll call this one boston. Based on her peers at the time ( small timeline sample size ) some might have been shortsighted and thought she was average. By the time I met her a couple of years after college she worked at a hedge fund and went from average to smoking hot plus brainiac where those knuckleheads who thought she might have been average in college didnt stand a chance with her. Better for me

I'm thinking Simon is going to do the same thing. I think he is going to blow up over the next 2 years and everyone else is going to seriously regret the mistake they made to my ( our ) benefit

While I'm not comfortable equating players/recruits to hot chicks that Maher dated, otherwise I like what you're saying.

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with it also but the analogy made sense to me for some reason :)

He played for Arizona, Clark was at MSU. Stats do lie sometimes especially when the minutes played per game barely allowed him to break a sweat.
