Ronald Roberts

R.I.P.
My NBA Buddy just returned from covering the Portsmouth Invitational and said that Ron Roberts turned out to be exactly the player/rebounder we've been lacking to make the NCAAs during that part of Lavin's tenure. I view dumping him as Lavin's first major mistake. As it turned out Quincy Roberts might have been valuable too. This guy may be a great recruiter (not so IMO) but his eye for talent leaves a lot to be desired. Same story with another Roberts, (Norm). St Johns can really pick 'em.

We would have hated Quincy Roberts. His numbers looked good at Grambling because he was in the SWAC. He left St. John's because their was no room for him to be the chucker he wanted to be

Didn't Norm bring in Sean Evans?

He's projected as a second round pick on nbadraft.net . It's tough to fault Lav on this one, though. It wasn't his recruit and he replaced him with Polee--another kid on the NBAdraft.net 2nd round.

Everyone makes mistakes. Would have been nice, but we are not talking Gary Peyton.

Everybody says Lavin had the difficult task of recruiting a whole team in 11. He didn't have to do that, could have kept a few of Norms recruits, especially since half the class were academic risks.

Wrong. He inherited a team with 12 returning players plus Ron Roberts commitment, full slate of schollies there. He replaced Roberts with Polee, Omari transferred at the end of June (too late to pick anyone up) and early in the year Rob Thomas decided not to play his redshirt senior year, can't remember why. Qunicy transferred mid year after playing in 4 games and having a concussion. Of the remaining 10 only Coker didn't average double digit minutes. 9 seniors honored at Senior Night including Rob Thomas.

Think that Thomas' knee damage would not let him continue.

Yeah I wasn't sure if it was the knees or wanting to concentrate on his studies or both and I was too lazy to look it up.

Bobre, good point on Roberts if you stated it four years ago. I don't recall too many posters complaining about Roberts release. There were a small number of posts that raised questions at the time. Did you question it then? Otherwise, this is no different than picking the winner of the Derby on Sunday morning.

I posted that dumping Roberts was a mistake many times at the time. We were going to be woefully short on big bodies and rebounding overall. It was as stupid as Norm rejecting Truck Bryant which ultimately cost him his job. Lavin has led a charmed life and doesn't have the record to be retained.

Come on. Truck Bryant would not have saved Norm's job.

Ultimately it was Norm's love affair with Boothe that cost him. Lavin started out that way but had the smarts to try Hardy at the point and made the tourney as a result. . Bryant may have saved the day while Norm was still there but he had a nice career at WVa instead. Dumping Roberts forced us to overplay Harkless up front where he shined and was one and done. With Roberts in the front court we might have gotten another year or two out of Mo. and a couple of recruits in the bargain. Now our roster is flawed once again and the NCAAs seem like a pipe dream with our lousy recruiting lately. Unless we start winning nobody will want to sign regardless of Lavin's line of crap.

Oh no, not the "if Omar (insert "Mo" instead of Omar) hadn't played so many minutes (add "and had to play in the front court") he would have stayed at St. John's another year instead of going pro" theory again. :pinch:

In fairness to Bobre, I do recall him saying on multiple occasions that we should have kept Roberts. Not exactly sure why that would have made a difference in Mo playing upfront because he is not a guard, but if he means playing more the 3 instead of 4, I can see that. I don't see how it would have had made any difference with his decision to go pro where he was drafted as a 3 anyway.

Wasn't going to compete with Harkless for time

Bobre, do you really think making the tourney that season boiled down to Malik's minutes being cut from 25 per game to 19 per game? I don't think so. One could say that Sean's minutes going from 21 per game to 12 per game was the reason. However, that would be just as wrong. You are right about Lavin having the smarts to play the right players that first season.
