This is to inform long time Redmen fans of the passing of Vincent Carcaro, who as a student in the late 70s and early 80s, and until he moved to Florida in 1990, was one of our most passionate , ardent, and vociferous fans. Vinnie "Boombatz" as we came to call him unoffically led the booster club section, a large section of almost 100 friends and fans a few rows behind the SJU bench. Vinnie was a larger than life character, towering in size at 6'5", and in personality. There was always something funny going on in his section. Imagine a large 6'5" very Brooklynite trying to mimic the old St. John's pep squad routine. He loved road trips, and was so visible, that after one of Mullin's teams lost in an NCAA regional, Mullin himself spotted Vinnie in a large group of friends, and came up to him to thank his group for support home and away that entire season.

Vinnie originated the "We are St. John's chant after a road trip to Notre Dame where the 'We are Notre Dame' chant thundered in their stadium." Upon his return, Vinnie, with help from student government, had posters printed up - the very same posters that are handed out on occasion today. When Vinnie relocated to Florida, he kept his season tickets for a few seasons, holding on to his last vestige of NY and St John's until it was clear he wasn't coming back.

At SJU, Vinnie was active in Student Goverment and Beta Epsilon Rho, but I don't think any of his loves at St John's exceeded Redmen basketball. You could love him , or hate him, but you couldn't ingore him. He was truly one of a kind. R.I.P. Vinnie. Say hello to Chris and Father Mariano. I'm sure you guys are laughing already.

Oh and sorry about the loss of your friend. I was a student at same time but didn't know him

Monte,
Thanks for the condolences. Father Mariano passed away 2 years ago in February I believe, after fighting pancreatic cancer. He was another colorful guy, well liked by SJU students who took his courses, or knew him from arou d campus or through his involvement with BEP.

Actually just read his obit. Sorry to hear. Had him for theology a number of times. Definitely a colorful character. I didn't always agree with him, but i respected him.

Condolences to his family and friends..... Did he ever post on Redmen?

I was out of touch with him for a very long time, so I cannot be sure if he did post or read here. I can tell you though that he was such a huge fan, and such a character, that if there was ever a history of great redmen fans, he would get a page for certain. We have such great fans here, and many of us get cantankerous from time to time, but I always appreciate just how passionate most of us are.
