RIP Mickey Crowley

Not the Cuse game when he called a foul on Reggie Carter instead of a charge on Louis Orr.

I remember one game where we are blowing out an opponent, a walk on (Ron DeQuiroz?) was at the scorer's table waiting to get in, but there was no stop in play for a couple of minutes. Crowley comes up limping and blows his whistle. One of the other officials came over and asked him if he was okay. He said he was fine but just wanted to get the kid at the scorer's table in. A class act.

I lost a dinner bet to my cousin, a Cuse alum, over that Carter-Orr "wrong" call
It happened around 40 years ago and he still needles me about it from time to time
Mickey, you blew that one - it was clearly a charge!!!

He called a tech on Frank Gilroy, in that Syracuse game, that was as bad as the Singleton tech call vs Duke.

Sad to hear, my Dad coached CYO with him way back when.
Always took notice when he was reffing the Big East games.
My brother says Crowley took him to an ABA preseason game he was reffing, got to go into the locker room and meet a bunch of players.

I was literally a little kid but I still remember going to that game with my father. Alumni held like 6,000 at the time but there was at least another couple hundred more people in there than that imo. You couldn’t get another person in there with a shoe-horn. Remember they were giving out these big buttons that said - “Redmen SQUEEZE the Orange!” lol. Crowley is lucky he got out of there alive that night. Also remember from then on he would always get booed before each Home game after that. Used to hate him with a passion and sorry but I remember him calling many BS calls against us in our own gym. And he basically handed that game to the ‘Cuse that night.

That being said it was a long time ago and I don’t wish bad upon him anymore. My condolences go out to his family and may God rest his soul.

IMO, the worst ref from that era was Steve Honzo
 
God bless him and his family. Never met him, but sounds like a great guy. Many of these old time basketball refs were salt of the earth type guys. R.I.P. Mickey.

The name sounds familiar so I’ll take your word for it. lol

I do remember I think Larry Lembo(?) having to play referee between Carnesecca and Crowley most games at Alumni. In fairness he probably saved little Looie a bunch of T’s & maybe a couple of ejections. He used to go ballistic at some of the horrendous calls by Crowley.

I thought Mickey was a terrific ref and gave us the benefit of the doubt most times.
 
I dreaded every time Jim Burr and Tim Higgins did our games.

My team and I played against Mickey in the Queens Alliance. He played third base for Pase Olds, not a bad player.

That's because Larry Lembo committed to us from Bishop Loughlin and later changed his commitment to Manhatten. I know because I lost him. The Christian Brothers made him do it. Excellent basketball and baseball player plus a great kid.

This is great banter guys. I'm 'bad' on the refs, never noticed them except on what I took to be egregious calls=any calls against us. Lol.
