RIP Jack Powers

I think that this Jack Powers was responsible for the greatest Manhattan College victory in their history, He scored close to thirty points in a 1958 ncaa opening round win over a Jerry West West Virginia team rated the top team in the country prior to that game.

Correct, when I played (not very well 😊) for Manhattan Prep they showed that film to the teams every year lol.

When the NYC schools owned the NIT, I'd get free tickets for the semis every year, courtesy of SJU and Mr. Kaiser. The ADs of the various schools would sit at courtside, Frank McLaughlin, Powers, Mr. Kaiser, Peter Carlesimo, A who's who of NYC basketball.

Somehow Wagner was part of the ownership as was NYU. I can see NYU given their early history but Wagner?

Manhattan College, now University, run by the Christian Brothers who taught me so excellently at Mater Christi.

Here is a photo of Jack Powers when he coached the NIT All Star Team on our international tour in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy in 1982. We became good friends with Mr. Powers and his family as we practiced at Manhattan College for a week prior to us departing the US. RIP Jack 🙏🏻IMG_6109_Original.jpeg
