RIP Bernie Beglane

Sad news, and brings back memories of waiting for the Long Island Press to be delivered so I could get Bernie's account of a Redmen home game. Without the internet and without ESPN, and little coverage on local tv or radio, Bernie was the go to guy for coverage of SJU basketball.

Worked with Bernie when he covered the Nets in the early '70s when I was at SJU. He was a good guy. :(

Sad news. When I arrived at St. John's – fresh-faced, know-nothing from Canada – Dean Beglane went out of his way to help me feel at home at St. John's. He was a generous teacher in the classroom and in the halls. I'm grateful for having had the chance to learn from him.

Rest in peace and my prayers are with his family.

RIP Dean Beglane.

Quick Story. A couple of days before my graduation, I get a phone call that I was three credits short. I had transferred several credits in and there was a clerical error that I thought had been handled. Anyway after several phone calls to try and clear up, I walked into Dean Beglanes office and the problem was solved within minutes. As I thanked him, I mentioned that I could use a couple extra tickets for graduation on Sunday. He gave me that "haven't I done enough for you today look", then reached into his desk and handed me the tickets.

He knew everyone and was a problem solver. Good Man.

Sad news. Really great person because he cared about the students.

He was close to Jay Horowitz, the Mets pr director, and I wanted to do a story on Franco and Viola for a summer issue of the Torch,. So he arranged for the Mets to get me a press pass, and then introduced me to them in the lockerroom after a game so I could do a quick interview.

I remember one funny moment in particular. It was the year Boo Harvey seemingly hit every clutch shot.

Harvey hits a game winning jumper at the Garden against DePaul. At the post game presser, one of the old sports writers from the Chicago Tribune (who used to be on that sports writers smoke filled round table cable show), basically called Harvey out for pushing off before getting off his shot, and then he left.

Bernie was not happy, and chased the reporter down and you could see he was giving it to him good for the low brow question.

RIP to one of the finest members of the SJU family.

Nice write-up by O'Connell and picked up by the Washington Post. Anecdotes from LC and Chris.

Many may not know but Bernie also refereed basketball. He was my sons advisor for Sports Administration. Even had him participate in the Jackie Robinson Foundation classes so he would receive financial aid. God bless him and his family.

Francesa took time to acknowledge Dean Beglane as a mentor and friend during broadcast this afternoon.

I loved Bernie, what a great teacher, mentor and friend.
I was out of school for 7 years living in St. Louis & St. John's was playing in the NCAA's at DePaul. I was able to call Bernie and a ticket was there waiting for me. A few years later when I decided to go back to school for a Master's I called Bernie and said I want to come back, and asked what do I need to do. He was there to help again. Just 2 small examples of what he did for me.
RIP Bernie

Saddened to see news of the passing of Bernie Beglane. I started thinking of stories to share about Bernie "A" but I can't pick a favorite. Dean Beglane found a way to accept credits for me from another University when I informed him that I enrolled at that school for a semester because I couldn't make the Pan Am games bound St. John's baseball team. Bernie also called and harassed an alum which led to a comically fortuitous lead and subsequent job with the Mets. Dean Beglane was incredibly generous with his students, and he always made time for us. If I had a question about material, he made me feel as important as the scores of people that called during the office visit (including Louie). Rest in Peace and thank you Bernie "A".
