Richmond Moves Up

Zach B
Chris Mullin told me there are no plans to fill the vacant advisor role Mitch Richmond had. #sjubb

Good, once less $uit on the bench. :)

regardless of whatever happens with coaching ability at least we know our staff can beat any other staff in the country in a scrimmage even with putting Matt at center

Perhaps this is how we can afford to pay off Slice: "Mullin isn’t planning to hire anyone to fill Richmond’s old advisor position"

Don't mind Richmond moving up, but I was hoping it would create an opportunity to add someone with coaching experience. Again, this is the only problem I have with the current state/direction of the program.

I have the same concerns. It could be a big "only problem". With the major upgrade in talent and depth this season, we should get a better feel halfway through the conference schedule whether an experienced tactician needs to be added to the staff, or whether all is well.

I don't think Mitch was allowed to do hands on coaching last year. He should be a big help w player development.

If the teams wins this year, I don't have a problem with this.

However, if they under perform, at say 11-19 or worse, then the inexperienced coach, without an AD, without an experienced bench coach, was paid $2 million by a neophyte university president to continue to mire this program in the muck.

With our history the likelihood of the latter, seems far greater than the former happening.

“I feel pretty good about what we have,” Mullin said.

Would have liked to hear a bit more confidence than "pretty good" - hopefully that's just Mullin Brooklynese for "rock solid"

Fingers crossed...

I think we win this year.

Im into it. Hall of fame name will of course help with recruits and I thought he looked more 'alive' than most on the bench last year.

At one point, relatively recently, there were some strong beliefs that we would be hiring Tom Pecora in some role. Haven't heard much about it since, so who knows, but there have been conversations between both sides.

Or one side.

I completely understand the skeptical comments about the staff and their collective lack of experience. It's not exactly the template of a strong traditional/balanced coaching staff...but...it's tangibly exciting and energizing, and I think we're going to see it translate to the players. I'm expecting to see mistakes from the staff, but I'm also expecting to see continual progress as the season goes. 2 hall of fame NBA players and a lot of raw talent. It's the most excitement we've had in the program in a long long time, let's run with it. Feeling optimistic!

Are volunteers allowed to sit on the bench? Hypothetically speaking, if someone like Mike Rice saw the value of getting back into the college game even if it was an unpaid role, could he be next to the coaches?

maybe just put him at the seat behind the scorers table to be closer to Mullin :)
