remembering the "old" BE over the years

What do you remember most of the "old" BE over the years?

I have some fond memories about the old BE and the BE Tournaments. I remember beating Yukon in the BE tournament in 2000 with Bootsy showing his stuff, as well as beating Cuse by one point in 1986 to win the BE as well. Both of those championships were classics.

And I can still remember the great loss of losing the Miami cheerleaders. Oh those cheerleaders.

I mentioned this before, but I recommend the documentary "A Decade of Excellence" for those who have not seen it. It's about the first ten years of the Big East Basketball Conference. It's obviously an older documentary but it has great interviews of Lou Carnesecca, Jack Kaiser, Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson, Bill Wennington & other conference notables like Patrick Ewing, PJ Carlesimo, Ed Pickney, Rollie Massimino, & Dave Gavitt.

I remember thinking the '86 and 2000 Big East Tournament champions were going to the Final Four. I remember watching in disbelief (and disgust) to what Auburn was doing our team out in Long Beach. I guess our game against Montana State (we didn't particularly play well) was a precursor. I also believe Berry had a slightly, sprained ankle.

The 2000 team fate was similar to the '86 team.... Struggled in the first round game before bowing out in the 2nd round. We were one of, if not, the hottest team in the nation going into the NCAA Tournament. It took me about 2 days to get over the loss to Gonzaga. I'm glad time has passed, and losses don't bother me, as much now. Nevertheless, that game irked the hell outta me. LOL

We actually had a good three-year run in the Big East Tournament from 1998-2000. I felt we were back to the pinnacle of college hoops. Good times, man. I'm looking forward to getting back to that level (and better) in the new conference.

My first semester at SJU was in the fall of 1984 . Saw the whole final 4 season including the big Georgetown games. My grades suffered that semester watching all that great basketball. My friend had Chris Mullin in one of his classes and I saw him one time in the halls waiting for a class. Looked so young back then.

The 1990/1991 season was also a very good one. They were 5 minutes away from another final 4. They played Duke.
Then in the late 1990's they almost went to another final four . I forget who they played in the Elite 8.

And St. John's beating Syracuse in the BE championship in 1986.

And graduating with Mark Jackson in Sept. 1987 , Everybody at the graduation stood up and gave Jackson a standing ovation.

This is not BE but NCAA. I remeber driving all the way down to Greensboro to wach the Elite 8 loss to Penn in overtime. That was a long drive home!!

That was a long drive home!!

I was in Elmont watching the St. John's-Ohio State game with a buddy, and then walked over to visit my parents after the loss. It was a three-block walk, and it felt like the longest walk ever. That loss hurt so much.

The 1986 & 2000 titles were great but the first Championship in the Garden (1983) although before my time, must have been special. I also remember beating UConn in overtime one year, I think it was 1992, in the first round. Always fun to beat them. Ah, the good ol days.

I loved that '99 team and what they did in the NCAA tournament. If tOSU wasn't cheating (Final Four appearance later stripped), who knows whether the Redmen would have another Final Four banner hanging in CA. No doubt in my mind that St. John's, Duke, and UConn were the three best teams in the country that year.

I went to several of the Duke-St. John's games at MSG over the years. The Marcus Hatten Miracle of 2003 was particularly special. I remember the 2000 Syracuse game where Barkley, Postell, etc., took down Jason Hart, Etan Thomas, and co. Great atmosphere at the Garden.

My least fond memory had to be the '87 tournament where St. John's got the screw job on DePaul's homecourt. I always hated Dallas Comegys and Rod Strickland after that.
