Redmen GREAT to BE HONORED May 1, 2015

My apologies for not getting this on here sooner. The Basketball Oldtimers Association will be inducting two St. John's greats into their HALL OF FAME on Friday, May 1, 2015.

The McIntyre brothers Bob & Ken (Posthumously) will join basketball writer Pete Vecsey, Long Time NET's Basketball Score Keeper, Herb Turetsky & Coach Tom Pecora as they're inducted into the Old Timer's Hall of Fame.

This is always a great opportunity to meet & greet a who's who of local metro area basketball coaches , media and fans. St. John's is always well represented & this year's honorees make the event even more special. SJU has already reserved 2 tables & I expect the coaching staff will be well represented.

Here's the details: Friday May 1, 2015 at SIRICO'S 8023 13 Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11208 (Bensonhurst) 5 mins from the Verrazano Bridge & 14th Ave. Exit off the Belt Parkway

6 p.m. Drinks (Open Bar) & 7 P.M. Dinner (Buffet style) Tickets are $95 & can be reserved by calling 917 476 7444

ps As of today 4/21/15 Reservations are up to 140

Wonderful that the McIntyre brothers are being honored. I went to Holy Cross with Bobby ( Go Knights!) who led the freshman basketball team to an undefeated season in my senior year. He had a soft jump shot he liked to take from the corner that was sweet to watch. Kenny went to Bayside HS and was first team PSAL. He was what we called a "chucker" then; now we would say an aggressive shooter I suppose. They both were on Coach Lapchick's 1963-64 NIT championship team as you know. I believe going into the final game against Villinova, Kenny was perfect at the foul line. He was our D'angello with an explosive (for a white kid) move to the basket. I especially remember them with their "possee" riding around campus in a beat up convertible that had a bumper sticker that read "Don't laugh lady, your daughter might be in this car" Kenny later owned the Salty Dog bar in Bayside. Both great looking blondes, I confess to having a man crush on them (Blush)

>:)
Championship in NIT over Nova was 64-65.

Correct. Remember it well because it was my freshman year. St. John's won 55-51 behind Kenny Mac's 18 points. In the opening round game against Boston College, Kenny shot the lights out (FGs and FTs), finishing with 42 nights in one of greatest performances I've ever seen by a Johnnie.

Yes thanks for the correction. I miss having access to the Stats that used to be part of this site where I could check my spotty memory.

You might try this one:http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-johns-ny/

Sometimes the information is spotty (like your memory & mine) or missing, but overall a good site on St. John's basketball history.
I know about that one. Our old stats for this site gave box scores so you could look at a game and ascertain if that was the game Ivan Kovac scored 23 points. Really helpful. What happened to it?

If they're somewhere out there in Cyberspace, it means you can probably find them through the right Google search.

Great time for CHSAA basketball. I lived nearby and was still in elementary school, but remember watching games vs. Molloy - Rudy Bogad and Billy Lawrence and Chaminade - can't remember names, but they had two good big kids, who were brothers and a good point guard. Was Mike Riordan on that Cross team?
By the way, Salty Dog was in Kew Gardens.

When I was a freshman, Kenny Mac was definitely the BMOC. His girlfriend was (or had been) Lynn Burke, a gorgeous blonde St. John's coed (she later did some modelling) who had won two Olympic gold medals in swimming in 1960. They were the picture-perfect California Dreamin' couple. Believe Kenny ended up living in the San Diego area, where he worked at car dealership -- about 15 years ago he sold a Ford Mustang to my friend, who, being a St. John's alum, was thrilled to do business with him.

Ken, haven't hear that BMOC term in a long time. I guess Lynn wasn't too happy when SJU closed the pool and converted the area to the fitness room. B)
Sounds like a great night in Bklyn. May try and make it.

Not to sidetrack the discussion too much but since you asked: Those features were custom built and pretty unique on the Internet when I first put them out, especially for a completely independent site. Even today almost all of the sports related websites are part of larger corporate networks and run data from just a few sources and just republish it on their sites.
At the time I had a full time team of programmers and web designers at my disposal as well as several redmen.com volunteers here who regularly updated the data. In recent years I have been on my own so I can only do so much. Due to many factors (including software compatibility with programming methods) I had to completely rebuild it. Functionally it is completed and I've even added some new features/functionality, but the data needs updating.

FYI: '15-16 is 19th Season redmen.com has been operational.

Shocked it's been that long.

yep, and that means one thing. We are getting old.. All of us.

It does seem like just a few years ago when the McIntyre's, post SJU, were tearing it up in the Long Island Press League. Did anyone here ever see those g9ames or know where they were played?

Those who were at Cross in the 60s - Was BIll O'Meara (sp?) the coach then?

I graduated in "59, but I think O' Meara succeeded the coach whose name I can't remember (although I have a picture in my head of him on the bench) in 1960 or '61.
