Rankings 2019-20

Last year we had the NET rankings thread, and as we know every point mattered since we were the final team selected to the Tournament. We ended up being the worst at-large team in history to make the Tournament (by RPI/NET- #73), thanks to our Q1 wins and a weak bubble (to put it mildly).

This year instead of just NET we could have a thread discussing all rankings. AP, NET, Quad 1, KenPom, recruiting class rankings, etc. It'd mostly focus on St. John's, but also the Big East and college basketball in general.

One thing I'd like to see is the Big East bounce back. We already have some pretty solid predictions for 2019-20:

Sporting News:
#7 Marquette
#23 Seton Hall

NBC Sports:
#4 Marquette
#6 Villanova
#12 Seton Hall
#19 Xavier
#20 Creighton

Sports Illustrated:
#6 Marquette
#7 Villanova
#15 Seton Hall
-
#27 Creighton
#28 Xavier

ESPN:
#2 Marquette
#5 Villanova
#12 Seton Hall
-
#28 Creighton
#30 Georgetown

Goodman:
#6 Marquette
#9 Villanova
#12 Seton Hall
#22 Creighton

If we hire who is rumored, a few of that hire’s guys follow him here, we retain Heron and Simon, and add a grad transfer or two (not including the aforementioned coach’s players) we could beat anyone. Maybe a certain NY Rens exec is hired and PA follows.

In the twist of all twists, maybe Ponds goes undrafted after a combined invite (currently not projected to be drafted) and decides to come back and learn under a legendary PG.

As a reminder the new rules allow a player to hire an agent, go through the ENTIRE draft process, and still return to college IF he was invited to the combine. https://www.google.com/amp/s/a.../nba-draft-ncaa-agent-rules-changes-explained

Or none of that happens and we finish i last place. Never a dull moment at St. John’s!

If Hurley comes and brings in a couple of his players while keeping Heron/Simon on board, I think we could crack the AP Top 25.

Next year should be a great one for the Big East and I hope we can contribute to that. Hurley is probably our best hope for immediate success.

Just a look at the guys Hurley could bring to play immediately next season if hired:

4* PG Jaelen House - would need release

#3 ranked JUCO Alonzo Verge - would need release (think Marcus Hatten)

Zylan Cheatham - Grad transfer would need waiver for sixth year

Rob Edwards - Grad transfer, no waiver needed (projected 2020 2nd round pick)

Jalen Graham - 4* center committed but not signed and would not need a release
