What is a radio?
It's sad when you think that many of us remember when transistors replaced tubes and a 9 volt battery amazingly made radio wireless and portable. Breathtaking advance - if you could afford a transistor radio!

Man, now that was technology - to play halfcourt schoolyard ball listening to the Knick game and Marv Alpert without having to choose one or the other.

In 1969, two glorious weeks at the away from it all Ten Mile River Boy Scout Camp in Narrowsburg, I was faced with having to deal with the pains of Mets withdrawal as they engaged in the stunning pennant race vs the Cubs.

At the last moment before departing for camp, my brother-in-law stuffed his brand new Sony AM radio into my knapsack so I wouldn't miss a pitch - if the radio wave gods cooperated. When he passed away too young 2 years ago that memory came flooding back. Lindsay Nelson, Ralph Kiner, Bob Murphy made anywhere seem like home.

That's what a radio was.

Radio is where I use to go “see” the Knicks in WHITE uniforms. Manhattan had cable. Queens did not get cable TV until the mid 80’s because of corrupt politicians and cable companies fighting over the rights to screw customers. Hence, unless it was a nationally televised broadcast, I don’t think I saw the Knicks at MSG ON TV in white uniforms until I was 20 years old. Plenty of Friday nights though watching the Knicks from strange places like New Orleans, Buffalo and Detroit Cal Ramsey and Jim Karvellas. (WOR 9)

Oddly, another game I remember from radio was St. John’s losing to Niagara in the Final Four season. It was from Niagara but the game was not televised at least in Queens. I listened to Dave Halberstam on WCBS if my memory is correct. Stunning loss and was made more frustrating because you couldn’t see it. Sure they did a great job announcing but the loss…

Radio Gaga is my favorite Queen song of all time.

Staying on topic - talk radio isn't going to talk St. John's recruiting in June lol. Tierney talked about Pitino a lot when he was hired. Once the season starts if we are doing well we will get coverage.

I believe the actual topic is our games being on radio but what you brought up is also a good point and part of radio coverage.
