Rich, a graduate of Xavier High School, was a starter on the 1958-59 team which won the Holiday Festival and the N.I.T. under the legendary Joe Lapchick.

He was also a member of the Skull and Circle Society, which is arguably the most difficult organization to gain admittance to for St. John's College students

Rich was a Math major during his undergrad days.

A true scholar-athlete.

I had the honor to know him and I will miss him.

Very sorry to hear. Surprised I didn’t get an email from Xavier about this. RIP.

Dick Engert was the perfect team player for the 58 59 team. Although undersized at 6' 5"" to play in the paint he guarded the opponents top forward in every game and was assigned to block out around the rim allowing Tony Jackson, who was an inch shorter than Dick but who had springs in his legs to go after the rebounds. This strategy worked perfectly as Jackson averaged almost 16 rebounds a game.
Dick didn't score much either as he let that phase of the game to Jackson, Seiden and Alfieri. That team was a great example of the whole being better than the parts due to Lapchick's coaching and players like Dick.
