This is freaking unbelievable. In Norm's first year, he held a well attended clinic for CYO coaches in the Brooklyn Queens Diocese. In the audience and a CYO coach presumably, was Glen Williams. Norm called him out to get some assistance on showing some fundamentals to the audience. Graciously, he volunteered to help Norm out.

Glen looked as fit and young as could be for someone his age and actually looked like he could step onto a court and play.

I always thought of Glen as our Keith (Jamaal) Wilkes, a silky smooth shooter and player who operated from the baseline with deadly accuracy. I guess he was a 2 for us, but also played the position like a small forward. 6'2 or a shy 6'3, I think he was one of our best players ever.

RIP

Does anyone know how LC recruited Glenn Williams from the USVI? (considering the farthest south Louie went in those days was Bay Ridge)

A true gentleman. RIP and condolences to his family.

Great Redman, better person. RIP Glenn.

"Starting late and recruiting all summer with his aides, Kresse and Brian Mahoney, Carnesecca scouted the country. They brought in six players, including Weedock.

Along the way, still uncommitted, was Glenn WilHams, 6‐4, at Laurinburg, (N.C.) Institute, and he may wind up a front court starter and a star of the future.

“Glenn is from the Virgin Islands,” said Carnesecca. “He was recommended by Ralph Abraham and Dan Cornelius, who used to play here. They are now teaching down there. Williams is an outstanding prospect, good rebounder, shooter and plays defense. He is quite a catch.”

Wonderful Johnny, he will be missed.

A very sad day for St. John's.

Prayers offered for the repose of his soul and prayers and condolences to his family and friends.

RIP, a great Johnny! I remember the 1976 season when Johnnies played undefeated Indiana in the tournament and were tied at half helped by Glenn's shooting. Second half Indiana pulled away and John Wooden who was doing commentary stated the shots stopped falling because of fatigue. Johnny's had played their hearts out but exhausted themselves. Super smooth shooting Glenn Williams.

The 1976 Indiana game was the same story that was played out time and time again in the sixties and seventies. SJU's bench after two subs would consist of second or third team CHSAA all stars who could not compete with the Indianas or Duke benches and SJU would usually falter in the late stages against deeper teams.
Looie didn't like to go deep into bench and this strategy worked fine vs most of the competition but many games vs top level teams his reluctance to recruit a deeper bench was costly.

Shocking news ... and very, very sad news. Totally took the wind out of my sails when I saw the name of the thread..

Have great memories of Glenn. Seems like only yesterday ...

So sad to hear this. He was inducted into the Brooklyn Old-timers Hall of Fame last Friday and was not able to attend. Glenn's years at St. John's came when I was just beginning to follow the program. And while I was more aware of the players who came from New York, Glenn became one of my favorite players because of his athleticism, hustle and enthusiasm. He always seemed to be the guy talking and encouraging his teammates.
My initial experience with him made meeting him years later that much more special. The fierce competitor I knew from the games turned out to have a kind heart, an easy smile and a quick, often self-deprecating sense of humor. Sitting with him at games he rooted as hard as any fan. Talking to him you knew immediately that he loved the school and the program, and relished the opportunity that St. John's and basketball had given him. Rest in Peace Glenn, yours was a life well lived.

This was the first team I followed, our first year with season tickets. Beaver Smith, Glenn Williams and Frank Alagia are the first players I identify with when it comes to SJU hoops.

Very sad news. I was still living in NY then, and was at most of the games. Glenn conducted himself with class on the court, and from what I'm reading here, off the court as well.
