R.I.P. Cal Ramsey
https://twitter.com/PeterVecsey1/status/1110202088737234945
If memory serves, he was one of our radio broadcasters for a few years. Early-to-mid 90s, I believe.

Long time Knick TV announcer who always seemed like a great guy. May he rest in peace..

As a kid growing up in Bronx, got to see Cal & Satch Sanders play many times at the old NYU gym near my home. Cal was a tough player and super on the boards on an outstanding team.

The Violets of NYU went to final four
God bless you Cal!

Great man I had the privilege of meeting about 8 years or so ago through a friend of my sons who played at NYU. There is a video called Cal Ramsey - Harlem Legend ,I believe, that is well worth watching.

Cal graduated the year before the Final Four team. That Final Four 59-60 team played Manhattan at the old Garden on 50th street and a fight broke out (reportedly because the Manhattan player who had been cheap-shotting Satch the whole game got him annoyed to the point that Satch's legendarily sharp elbows were used for dental improvements on the Manhattan player). The story is that Cal Ramsay came out of the stands and threw Satch under the scorer's table to make sure he would get neither hurt or suspended. RIP fellow Violet.

That distinctive voice coming over the airwaves. Always cool and calm Cal. Loved listening to him call SJU and Knicks games. Loved him interviewing Louie before or after a game when we were still a big deal in NYC media and WFAN carried our games. A great loss.

The guy was a monster player at NYU.
From his obit:
An All-American as a senior, he still holds a number of Violet hoops records, including rebounds in a game (34 vs. Boston College), season rebound average (19.6), career rebounds (1,101), and career rebound average (17.5). Ramsey's 20.2 career scoring average is fourth-highest in program history, while his 1,275 career points in only three seasons (freshmen weren't eligible) ranks 11th on NYU's all-time scoring list.

Wow! It's funny, but back in the days pre-internet, you had little idea of who someone was who pleayed just a few years before you started following basketball. While it was reasonable to assume Cal played basketball, I really never made that connection, only that he was the Knicks TV announcer.

Thanks guys for putting some color around his college days.

Back then in the pre cable days, many home games were blacked out, and only a limited number of away games televised. Most of us had the pleasure of Marv Alpert's amazing radio broadcasts even if we were in the schoolyard, thanks to someone having a transistor radio to listen to during afternoon games.

Cal was an affable TV broadcaster, capable and professional, but a lot like home cooking for Knicks fans. Cal Ramsay and Walt Frazier (with the expanding vocabulary he gained by studying the dictionary). R.I.P..

Just as a footnote to your post, Satch Sanders, looking very dapper and statesman-like, came to the SJU fundraiser for the Lapchick statue.

Just remembered besides the great Cal Ramsay and Satch Sanders there were Happy Hairston, Mal Graham, Barry Kramer - not all playing on the same team but for the same NYU - which in some seasons was superior to the Redmen.
College Basketball Memories!

I agree Beast. I had no idea what he did in his college career, but fondly remember him doing Knick games. Thanks guys for bringing me up to speed on his career.

Cal, RIP and my condolences to his family.
