St. John’s

St. John’s looks to be on pace to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 when it made the First Four. After four Big East games, Pitino’s team is in a four-way tie for first place. If you were wondering if Pitino still had it, he absolutely does. Pitino is one of the best at leaning into what his team is good at. Pitino inherited a good offensive rebounding team — the Red Stormranked 25th in offensive rebounding rate last season — and he’s taken it to another level. This year, the Red Storm are getting back 41.6 percent of their misses, good for third nationally.

Read the article as a NYT subscriber. Pitino did not inherit a good rebounding team; he inherited Joel and added a mix of all new players. Pitino has put together this team and his coaching (choice of players and teaching "old dogs new tricks") are why we have this interesting offensive rebounding stat. It will be interesting to look at the team stats after the season to see the "Rick effect".

True, I thought the same thing when I read it yesterday, but he kept the voodoo mojo going. :ROFLMAO:

Could be true to say he returned last season's #3 offensive rebounder who kept the momentum going. But Ledlum and Zuby are statistical and common sense upgrades on Jones and Posh who were last year's next two ORPG leaders.

We were actually 8th in the country in offensive rebounds per game last year. Soriano, Jones, and Posh were top 5 trios in the country with a combined 8.4 per game between them.

Offensive rebounds per game, is somewhat overrated, IMO. I'd like zero offensive rebounds, because I want every shot to go in. You get four or five boards on one possession, and you're total rises easily.

What this writer cited, percentage of missed shots that we rebound, is a better metric, IMO.

We were also 6th in overall rebounds per game last year if that makes it better.

I think offensive rebounds is generally a good statistic. It’s not perfect since you need to miss shots to rebound them…and some shots like drives to the basket have a higher probability of being rebounded by the offense. But it’s a good indicator of hustle and mentality.

Joel, Ledlum and Zuby are averaging 9.0 per game this year. Impressive.
This might be the best offensive rebounding team in the country with Luis back. Even my guy Jenkins excels here.

This is the one area where we are a ++ team and truly elite. Soriano is a top 5 offensive rebounder, but then you add Ledlum who is a beast and Zuby whose #s are just preposterous.
