Progress with a Forward Retreat

Class of 72

Yes, sarcastic and oxymoronic but the reality is that other than observing some individual progress of players like Yakwe and Sima there hasn't been any and our progress report would be a big fat incomplete, including our staff.
Reality is post grads like Mouvlika and Johnson have brought zero to this young group.  Reality is that we can't win any games with the end of last year's bench playing significant minutes. Alibegovic, Balamou and Jones have been   mediocre at best and over matched in every aspect of the game. Reality is the coaching staff is grossly inexperienced and depends on a young kid to draw up plays.  This staff will only be successful with 4 and 5 star talent and not 2 or 3 star projects.  That means players like Mussini, Alibegovic and Ellison need to come off the bench to play spot minutes replacing those 4 or 5 star players.  That means forgetting about 4 or 5 year rebuilding projects and securing ready for prime time players now, even a 1 and done if possible.  After the Syracuse win our team made a quick forward retreat on every level of basketball imaginable and bringing in a totally new team is going to be the only solution.  Barry Rohrrsen and Matt Abdelmassih were not hired to coach as that is neither ' s forte, especially Slice from his Manhattan College curse experience.  Get the players. ......period!

Mostly agree 72 but there is one alternative-CM realizes the need for an experienced X and O's coach and secures one.

College hoop is about having a good players . Roy Williams won championships cause of players definitely not because he is an X&O guy. I have problem judging the staffs coaching this year due to the lack of talent. I think there is a learning curve....... ST JEAN could be fantastic. Time will tell.

When Roy Williams was at Kansas always thought his teams were among the best in the country at ball and player movement on offense. Not as much at Carolina. Look we all know players are important but don't sell the profession of coaching short.

Coaching is both a skill and an art. Some have it but most don't. Best example is Syracuse without Boeheim. As many years as Mike Hopkins has been an assistant coach, he went 4-5 while coaching the orange. Hopefully Mullin learns the art sooner rather than later. I'm not sure the skill set will be there but he has been around some excellent coaches so we pray something has rubbed off. We will see next year. This year is all about recruiting.

No way I'm selling the profession short. There is a huge mix bag of successful coaches All have their strengths and weaknesses. That's why some are life long assistants (respectfully). Ask mike Dunlap X&O "genius."

Exactly! We don't need a head coach we have one in Mullin. IMO we could use an assistant like Mike Dunlap, an X and O genius. Just ask SL who had his best season at SJU when Dunlap was his assistant.

Greg St. Jean is going to be terrific with some more experience imo. He, and Mullin, just have nothing to work with this year. There is no talent to compete at this level. Mussini and Ellison are good 3* players but are more suitable to specific roles as substitutes. It is the "older" players that bring nothing to this team because of their lack of talent. Balamou, Jones, Mouvlika, Johnson and Alibegovic get inordinate minutes out of necessity but as it has been regurgitated many times here, they stink. They would get less than 10 minutes even in average programs. In the Big East they are an unmitigated disaster where the best coaches, coach K and Jim Boeheim included, would lose most games with this bunch. I have seen Ponds play a half dozen times which is more than some of the schools that offered him and I am convinced Mussini will only be a sub to him. Bashir Ahmed has developed incredibly fast in junior college playing at the highest JC level and will thrive with players like Ponds and Lovett feeding him the ball. Once Yakwe develops his shot he will be an incredible small forward. He appears to be a quick study and St. Jean and Mullin have already improved his free throw form. Owens and Freudenberg at 6'11 and 6'9 will be more than adequate as first off the bench. Certainly a huge improvement over Jones and Mouvlika. The staff will round out this recruiting class with another terrific player. This year will be a distant memory with the addition of real ballers. If I'm wrong, Paul can keep me in purgatory forever. :)
